NRITYAGARAM BANGALORE
Nrityagram is India's first modern Gurukul for Indian
classical dances and an intentional community in the
form of a dance village, set up by Odissi dancer Protima
Gauri in 1990. The residential school offers training in
Indian classical dance forms, Odissi, Mohiniattam,
Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali and
Manipuri
Scooped out of the red earth
and built along the lines of
Roman amphitheatres, this is
one of the most famous
structures at Nrityagram. It is
here that several thousand
people congregate every
February for the annual
Vasantahabba.
The center should cater to 45 students of dance and 45 for Design of this performing art
theater studies.

Only 30% of the site to be used as foot print of the building in a publicly used common and
crowded area involved a lot of
ways to seclude the structure from
the chaotic atmosphere but still
link it with its surroundings , thus
by making a spacial environment
inside the space.

DESIGN BRIEF:

A thoughtfully
evolved temple built
in 1998, welcomes
people to the
Nrityagram, near
Hesaraghatta Lake, it
depicts the image of
Kelucharan
Mohapatra, guru of
founder Protima Bedi
in a dancing pose.

SECTION

CONCEPT:

ODISSI GURUKUL

Natural raw faces of stone

fill its walls, suspended with
strength that counters the
giving gestures of the dance
it houses. Here the spirit of
Orissan temples re-conjures
the magic of thousands of
years, here the lull of
Nrityagram and even the
sprinkles of Nature's sound
dissipate.

GUEST COTTAGES
These round structures,
inspired by the yurts of Tibet
and Ladakh, have housed some
of the greatest maestros of
dance and music, who have
come to perform at
Vasantahabba.

YOGA CENTER
Reminiscent of
Stonehenge, the
Yoga centre is an
open structure
attached to the
temple. This
space is also used
for in-house
performances
under an open
sky

Built like a reverse 2,

this structure is the
heart of the village.
The entire community
eats together and it is
from the service block
that our daily
sustenance appears
(as if by magic!

A completely open courtyard

and an angled thatch roof
framing a piece of nature
announce the great breadth
of the residence and its
concealed dance hall. A
pattern flows downward in
giving half-moons, which
imitate the rounded nature
of all Mohiniattam
movement.
Winding flowery paths
approach the Gurukul, the
strong symmetrical base of
granite, red brick and
large door-like windows.
Mortar-less stone-filled
archways are a
distinguishing
characteristic of the
Gurukul. Relying on
nothing more than ancient
physics, the fine silvery
stones are suspended in
space, frozen in nonexistent motion.

Its situated in Jail Ground, Tamil Nadu Government property,
connected to Dr Nanjappa Road 24m wide
North side is connected with Gandhipuram bus stand, East side
to Jail complex, West to Dr Nanjappa road and South to
Tamilnadu Tourism
