Cycle Patterns in Cylindrical Grinding
Grinding a Non-cylindrical Part on Cylindrical Grinder
Schematic illustration of grinding a non-cylindrical part on a cylindrical
grinder with computer controls to produce the shape. The part rotation
and the distance x between centers is varied and synchronized to grind
the particular work piece shape.
Thread Grinding
Thread grinding by (a) traverse and (b) plunge grinding
Plunge Grinding
Plunge grinding of a workpiece on a cylindrical grinder with the wheel dressed to a
stepped shape
Plain Cylindrical Grinding Machine
Working of Plain Cylindrical Grinder
Figure illustrates schematically this machine and
various motions required for grinding action. The
machine is similar to a centre lathe in many
respects. The work piece is held between head
stock and tailstock centres. A disc type grinding
wheel performs the grinding action with its
peripheral surface. Both traverse and plunge
grinding can be carried out in this machine
Internal Grinding Operations
Schematic illustrations of internal grinding operations: (a) traverse
grinding, (b) plunge grinding, and (c) profile grinding
Universal Cylindrical Grinder
Universal Cylindrical Grinder Working
Universal cylindrical grinder is similar to a plain cylindrical one
except that it is more versatile. In addition to small worktable
swivel, this machine provides large swivel of head stock, wheel
head slide and wheel head mount on the wheel head slide .
This allows grinding of any taper on the work piece. Universal
grinder is also equipped with an additional head for internal
grinding as shown in figure

Centerless Grinders
Work not supported on centers but by
work rest blade, a regulating wheel, and a
grinding wheel

How Centerless Grinders
Work
Work supported on work rest blade equipped
with suitable guides
Rotation of grinding wheel forces work onto
rest blade against regulating wheel
Regulating wheel controls speed of work and
longitudinal feed movement
Centers fixed diameter of work controlled by
distance between wheels and height of work
rest blade
Centerless Grinding Operations
Schematic illustration of centerless grinding operations: (a) through-feed
grinding, (b) plunge grinding, (c) internal grinding, and (d) a computer
numerical-control cylindrical-grinding machine
