The Jurassic Period

John Baffoe

Overview
The Jurassic period, 206 to 144 MYA. Its 54 million years of the

Mesozoic Era.
It gets its name from the Jura mountains on the border
between France and Switzerland.( where rocks of this age
were first studied)
Where on present day earth can u find Jurassic fossils?( Blue
Nile Gorge, Ethiopia).(Solnhofen limestone, Germany.
Great plant-eating dinosaurs roaming the earth, feeding on
lush ferns and palm-like cycads and bennettitaleans smaller
but vicious carnivores stalking the great herbivores oceans
full of fish, squid, and coiled ammonites, plus great
ichthyosaurs and long-necked plesiosaurs vertebrates
taking to the air.-University of California Museum of
Paleontology.

Jurassic
Pangaea

During the Early Jurassic

Pangaea was beginning to
break up between Africa,
modern America, and
South America.
By Mid Jurassic, rifts were
opening up the Central
Atlantic Ocean, and the
Gulf of Mexico formed
North America and
Eurasia began to spread
forming the North Atlantic
Ocean.
Conditions, climate was
relatively warm and moist
over much of Northern
America. Desert and
seasonally wet conditions
throughout Africa, South
America, and southern
North America.

PLANTS
Large Majority of trees were

Conifers
Low latitude vegetation
were ginkgoes
The shrubs mostly
consisted of ferns

Sea life
Rising sea levels flooded

many of the continental

interiors during the Jurassic,
creating warm, shallowwater environments where
marine
animals and plants could
thrive.
microscopicphytoplankton-

coccolithophores, dino
flagellates, and
foraminifera.
