Location Shots for The

Speculum

Throughout the filming process of The Speculum, we will need to film in multiple places to set the tone of
horror. We will film in a total of three different locations. One will be a newly renovated house, keeping in theme
with the conventions of a Creepy Kid horror film. The second location will be the interior of the cottage, the small
space will play on the audiences fear of isolation. The final location will be the fields surrounding the cottage to
highlight the isolation the family will feel.
Films such as The Orphan and The Children of the Corn feature an
isolated house and many other mainstream horror films contain an
isolated house of some sorts. Therefore our audience members will be
aware of the effect that the lone house has on the atmosphere, so will
subconsciously relate the house to isolation and the lack of control a
person will feel when faced with the situation presented in our film.
Generally, Creepy Kid horror films utilise the isolated house to
highlight the feeling of helplessness and vulnerability of the
characters during their ordeal, and both of these films do this well.
The audience will automatically be able to understand the
vulnerability and the film will able to relate multiple feelings at one
time. By choosing a similar location used in The Orphan and The
Children of the Corn, we aim to replicate the feelings the audience

This location will help to establish the
specific genre of our film, Creepy Kid
Horror. The house is quite isolated and
seemingly rundown. The exterior
represents an old-fashioned house,
also emphasising the classic haunted
house feel. It has a look that will
highlight the audiences fear of
isolation and set up the wanted tone
for our films opening credits. Shooting
certain establishing shots in the
introduction of the opening will

Location: Little Crawley

Analysis: To emphasise the feeling of
isolation in our film opening, we will
begin with an establishing shot of the
countryside surrounding the cottage.
This will highlight how helpless the
family will be when the ghost/ demon
begins to pray on the family.

Films such as Mama and Evil Dead are based in an isolated

location such as a wood or a countryside. Many other films such The
Woman In Black use an isolated location. Not only does the isolated
location provide an explanation for the events in such films to go
unnoticed, as a haunting in a heavily populated area would be
obvious and authorities would have knowledge of it relatively
quickly, but also adds to the tension portrayed in the film.
Furthermore, large country trees are often related to events in horror
films such as hangings, so the audience will consciously or
subconsciously relate the large trees to the idea of death and
hauntings. Thus allowing frightened feelings to naturally occur within
the audience, adding to the atmosphere they will feel throughout the
scenes.
