Independent Film Production Company- New

Line Cinema
This American film studio (founded in 1967 by Robert Shaye)
distributes film across the world to Canada, UK, Australia and
Zealand. After its success of, The lord of the rings film
trilogy that brought commercial success to the studio, it
became subsidiary to the well-known and highly successful
Warner Bros. in 2008. In comparison to other independent
companies, New Line Cinema grew and prospered to become
one of Hollywoods major film studios.
Some examples of New Line Cinema films include, The
hobbit the conjuring and Annabelle. These films listed are
based around my genre that contain horror and thriller, this
would allow my production to easily fit the code and
conventions of their company.
New Line Cinema could distribute my production as the
target audience would have an awareness and expectation
of the genre, therefore my primary audience would be
thriller seekers. Even though this company is independent,
its parent company can support them finically to produce
high budgeted films. However by as New Line Cinema isnt
mainstream as others (e.g paramount pictures) enigma can
rise from the lack of knowledge of this company; this links to
Barthes theory of the, Enigma code as this mystery will be
solved by the demographic watching the film.

Major Production Company- 20th Century

Fox
20th Century Fox, one of the big major American film studios
owned by 21st century Fox, is best known for distributing the
two highest-grossing film of all time, Titanic and, Avatar.
20th century fox distribute films such as, Ice Age, X-men and,
Fantastic Four. The target audience for this production
company is teens, however subliminal messages signifying
context for parents and children, with mature, high class and
high budgeted productions.
Although this company has the success of distributing the two
highest-grossing films of all time (which happens to be sci-fi

developing a niche audience, and ruining the companies
reputation. To the eye of the demographic sci-fi genres are
very un-realistic signifying their target audience as teens. This
conforms to the hypodermic needle theory as teenagers are a
passive audience and believe what they see in films or on
television. This dramatically subverts my genre of a thriller, a
more realistic styled narrative, this allows connections
between the demographic and character/narrative- linking to
the Blumler and Katzs theory of personal relationships and
identity as they will be building relationships between the
characters in the film.

Major Production Company- Warner Bros.

American Entertainment, Warner Bros. is one of the major
film studios- founded in April 4th 1923 by the Warner
family. This company is one of the leading distributers of
entertainment programming to domestic markets.
Warner Bros. Film production list includes, Batman Vs
Superman, Harry Potter and, Mad Max. The typical
genre of this production company is connoted to be action
and fantasy films.
Even though the genre is signified as action fantasy films,
a sub-genre includes thriller, allowing my production to fall
into this classification. However as this isnt as the thriller
is a sub-genre and not the main theme- my production of
psychological thriller may cause some confusion among
the demographic. Again this links to Barthe's theory of the
Enigma code where this mystery and confusion can deter
their target audience from watching my production. To
conclude Warner Bros. wouldnt be the best production
company for my film.

Production Company- Sony Pictures

Entertainment
American Entertainment, Sony pictures, is subsidiary of
Sony and is a member of the motion picture association of
America. Sony Pictures has a worldwide network in which
they distribute their different films, each separate platform
of network holds a different genre.
Sony Pictures distributes films such as, Spider-man, After
Earth and, Goosebumps. These films share the genre of
sci-fi and fantasy films.
Sony pictures and 20th century fox production company
are very similar. They both have film productions that are
connoted with a teenage target audience- which again
links back to the hypodermic needle theory previous
explained. Due to the extreme differences of genres
between the company and my production, it signifies and
even foreshadows the failure of my production on this
network. However Sony Pictures Entertainment has a
worldwide basis of network which distribute different
genres that could support and conform to my production
gaining it a mass audience.
