What Is A Flood ???

Is a natural event or occurrence where a
piece of land that is usually dry land,
suddenly gets submerged under water.
Occur suddenly and recede quickly
Dangerous, cause damage to life and
property
Carry along objects like houses, cars,
furniture and even people
Wipe away farms, trees and many more
heavy items.

Economic
Roads, bridges, farms and houses are
destroyed during flash flood.
People become homeless.
The government deploys firemen, police
and other emergency apparatuses to help
the affected.
All these come at a heavy cost to people
and government.
Takes years for affected communities to
rebuilt and business to come back to
normal.

Environment
Chemicals and other hazardous
substances end up in the water.
Cause massive leakage in nuclear
plants
Cause high radiation
Kills animals and other insects in
afftected
area,
destroying
the
ecosystem

People and Animals

Have died in flash flood
Injured or homeless
Water supply and electricity are
distruped
Brings a lot of diseases and
infections

But ... There is also

something good about
floods

Floodwaters carry lots of nutrients

that are deposited in the plains and
farm field.
Farmers love such soils, as they are
perfect for cultivating some kinds of
crops.

Rains
Sometimes, there is heavy rain for a
very short period that results in
floods.
Each time there are more rains than
the drainage system can take, there
can be floods.

River Overflow
Rivers can overflow their banks to
cause flooding.
This happens when there is more
water upstream than usual, and as it
flows downstream to the adjacent
low lying araes, there is a burst and
water gets into the land.

Strong winds
Sea water can be carried by winds
onto dry coastal lands and cause
flooding.
Sometimes, water from the sea
resulting from a tsunami can flow
inland to cause damage.

Dam Breaking
Dam man-made blocks mounted
to hold water flowing down from a
highland.
The power in the water is used to
turn
propellers
to
generate
electricity.
Too much water held up in the dam
can cause it to break and overflow
the area.

How To Prevent Floods

Sea / Coastal
Education
Vegetation

Sea / Coastal Defence Walls

Sea walls and tide gates have been
built in some places to prevent tidal
waves from pushing the waters up
ashore.

Vegetation
Trees, shrubs and grass help protect
the land from erosion by moving
water.
People in low-lying areas must be
encouraged to use a lot of vegetation
to help break the power of moving
flood water and also help reduce
erosion.

Education
People only have little knowledge of
the effects that can have during a
flood happening.
Education is important to inform and
caution people on the dangers of
floods, what causes floods, and what
can be done to minimise its impact.
