PERCEIVED CHALLENGES THAT THE VARIOUS

ETHNIC GROUPS MAY EXPERIENCE IN
EXPRESSING DISGUST
1. Fewer ways of personally expressing disgust.

2. Ignoring object of disgust instead of confronting

(haughty persons).

3. The fear of causing offense or conflicts.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MALES AND

FEMALES (ETHNIC)
The Gas: Similar expressions, however the male will use
facial expressions in some cases while the female will
ignore.
The Ewes: No differences were indicated.
The Fantes: Female is more proactive and disciplinary
(scolding). While the male just uses emotive
expressions.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MALES AND FEMALES

(GENERAL)
1. Women are generally more proactive in expressing
disgust.

2. Generally, confrontation was not an initial personal

expression of disgust for males.
3. Conflict of responses about what was inappropriate.
Chastisement (females) vs. the raining of insults (males)

Inadequate understanding due to lack of accurate
equivalent word for disgust in some local languages.

WHAT WE LEARNT AS A GROUP

1. Correlation with a study that proved the overlapping
factor of anger and disgust by Widen, S.C et al. (2004,
May).
2. Higher prevalence of politeness in expressing
disgust by the older generation than the younger.
3. The importance of breaking down questions.
4. Being diverse in communication and meeting times.
5. Increasing individual participation and overall
efficiency.

FINAL THOUGHTS
The experience of interviewing the older generation and
working together as a group was enlightening and
educative.
