Gonorrhea
Sexually transmitted disease
Caused by a kind of bacteria

Can effect men and women


Can cause infection in the genitals, throat, and
rectum

Very common infection


especially for people ages 15-24

Can be a serious health risk if not treated


People diagnosed with gonorrhea often have
chlamydia as well

How is it Spread?
Spread by vaginal, anal, or oral sex
Can be passed from a pregnant woman to her
baby

Is not passed through casual contact

Symptom's
Often there is no symptom's
Most people are not aware they have it, especially
women

If you do get symptom's they begin in as little as


1-4 days after you get infected

May only appear in the morning and be mild


9 out of 10 oral infections show no symptom's at
all

Women Symptoms
abdominal pain
bleeding between menstrual periods
fever
menstrual irregularities
painful intercourse
painful urination
swelling or tenderness of thevulva
the urge to urinate more than usual
throwing up yellowish or yellow-green vaginal discharge

Male symptoms
pus-like discharge from the penis pain
burning feeling while urinating
more frequent urination than usual

Treatment
Is easily treated
Health care provider will give you antibiotics
Take all prescribed medicine even if symptoms go away
Do not share medicine with anyone
Get treated with your partner to prevent getting
infected again
Get tested again after 3 months to make sure infection
is gone
Medication will not undo permanent damage caused by
disease

Should wait 7 days after finishing medication before


having sex again

Prevention
Abstain from vaginal, anal, and oral sex
Use female or latex condoms every time you
have intercourse
