VOCABULARY DRILLS

What are Vocabulary Drills?

Vocabulary Drills helps students learn how to approach new words
and to become more comfortable with the languagefreeing them to
explore new words and their meanings. Vocabulary study is
contextualized with both narrative and expository(like articles,
scientific passages, etc.) passages. Additional analysis skills help
students figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words in their own
reading like:
1. Making connections helps students build personal word power.
2. New vocabulary words are connected by synonyms, antonyms, and
analogies to words they may already know.

Techniques for learning New Vocabulary

A. Put the definition in your own words.
The first technique for learning new words is to put the definition in your own
words.
It is best to try to condense the definition to only one or two words, this will make
it easier to remember.
EXAMPLE: 1. Word Heinous- The definition of heinous is abominable, vile. But
it is easier to remember by the word Horrible.
2. The dictionary definition of a word can be simplified by condensing the definition
into one word, for example: Expiate. Its dictionary definition is to put an end to, to
make amends for. This definition may be summed up by one word Atone.

B. Write Down.
Word lists in each book saves time for students. Pen down the words and their
meanings that are difficult to remember.
C. Use Flashcards.
Creating your own set of flashcards is also an easy technique. Cut
heavyweight paper into a size that you feel is manageable. When practicing
your words by writing them down, simply write the words on one side of a
flashcard and write the definition on the other side.
D. Create A Word Picture.
Creating your own word pictures is another visual technique that you can
apply to many words.
EXAMPLE: For Sovereign, you might draw a small crown.

E. Set Goals.
Whatever technique works best, it is necessary to set goals you plan to
learn words that you have listed.
Divide the list so you have a pre-set goal each day of how many words
you will learn.
This makes the task much less easier because you will be able to
measure your accomplishments each day rather than trying to attack in
one sitting which seems to be as an impossible task.
