What is a Solar Cooler?

A

solar cooler is a coolingdevicethat is

operated completely
withenergycoming from the sun.

It

can store food, medications, and other

products that require cold temperatures.

The Cooling Process

It

is through the process of Evaporation

that the cooler keeps food cold.
In most electrically-powered
refrigerators, this is achieved by the
electric motor powering a compressor,
which turns therefrigerantgas into a
liquid.
But with this solar cooler it is just by the
heat of the sun and wet clothes.

Benefits
(In a Calamity hit perspective)
It

can allow calamity hit areas to store

food, medicine, and other goods that
need cold storage.
It can eliminate food borne illnesses and
prolong the life of vaccine/ medicine
It is absolutely low cost.
Materials can be found on ground zero.

Other Benefits
Electrical

refrigeration is a huge energy

drainer but solar refrigeration can bring
relief to the electrical grid and provide a
less expensive energy alternative.
Scientists believe that the concept of
solar cooler can be a great investment
for the developing world.

Experimentation
We

were limited by the accuracy of our

sensors, being on a budget, they were
fairly cheap temperature gauges that
measured both humidity and temperature.
Ambient Temperature Local while the test
is on going is averaging at 32 C
Humidity is at 85%
Testing was essential for the device is best
in hot and low humidity areas.

We

found that our design bottomed out

at about 22 degrees C (71F) which is a
pretty decent drop in temperature
considering its just evaporating water
By the way the temperature measured
was the air inside the food storage pot.
