i) Professional Body ii) Professional Society?

Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM)

A statutory body formed in 1972 constituted

under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967
Its purpose is to regulate professional conduct
and practice of registered engineers in order to
safeguard the safety and interest of the public.

Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM)

The was established in 1959 and its primary function is to promote

and advance the science and profession of engineering in any or
all of its disciplines and to facilitate the exchange of information

Engineering.

ROUTE TO PEng
1st Step: Register with BEM as Graduate Engineer upon your

graduation. It is the law under the Registration of Engineers Act

1967 which was implemented in 1972 that requires every practicing
engineer to be registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia
(BEM).

2nd Step: Undergo certified training (upon becoming Graduate

Engineer). i. To obtain at least 4 years of working experience in the

field of engineering one is qualified in, ii. To attend the mandatory
60 hours of talks/seminars organized or endorsed by the BEM.
(Note: Tenure of your training depends on the nature of works in the
respective engineering profession. Please check the latest ruling
with BEM official website)

3rd Step: Fill up the application for Professional Engineer (and

MIEM)

4th Step: Professional Examination

engineers).
Degree-qualified, and have gained professional
competencies through training and experience.
The formation process of a chartered engineer generally
takes a minimum of four years over and above an
accredited Master in Engineering degree
The title chartered engineer is protected by civil law. The
Engineering Council regulates the practice of professional
engineering in the UK. With more than 180,000 registrants
from many countries

PART 2:
How to prepare yourself to be a
good engineer

What are the attributes of a

good engineer?

A Good Engineer must have:

Hard skills are the

foundation of a successful
career. But soft skills are the
cement

What is Hard Skills?

Hard skills include the specific
knowledge and abilities required for
success in a job
or basically, your technical skills...
What you will learn in class

Soft
skill
s

You need
to develop your
soft skills

How to enhance your soft skills

at university?
