INTRODUCTION
Fish farming or Pisciculture involves raising
fish commercially in tanks or enclosures,
usually for food.
Fish is a cheap source of
animal protein for our food.
Worldwide, the most
important fish species used
in fish farming are carp, tilapia,
salmon and catfish

There are two ways of obtaining fish.

One is from natural resource which is called
capture fishing.
The other way is by fish farming which is
called culture fishery.
Fishing can be done in marine and
freshwater ecosystems.

MARINE FISHERIES
Marine fisheries are conducted in all the
oceans and seas of the world, including bays
and estuaries. The capture and culture of
aquatic organisms in salt water accounts for
the bulk of the fishery products that reach
world markets.

Popular marine fish varieties include pomphret,

mackerel, tuna, sardines and bombay duck.
marine fishes are caught using many kinds of
fishing nets from fishing boats. Yields are
increased by locating large schools of fish in
the open sea using satellite and echosounders.

Some marine fish of high economic value

are also farmed in seawater. This includes
finned fishes like mullets ,bhetki and pearl
spots ,shellfish such as prawns, mussels
and oysters as well as seaweed. Oysters
are also cultivated for the pearls they make.

INLAND FISHERIES
India has vast and varied inland fisheries resources. Rivers,
streams lakes, reservoirs, tanks, ponds, irrigation canals,
multipurpose dams, and paddy fields provides an immense
scope for the propagation and production of fishes.
From these large numbers of resources, fishes can be
obtained by two ways, they may be captured directly from
the river systems and large lakes, or they may be cultured by
employing artificial and scientific techniques in smaller
inland areas like ponds, tanks, paddy fields etc.

CULTURE OF INLAND FISHES

The Life cycle of fish allows us to control
them by spawning them artificially.
Salmon eggs are grown in hatcheries.
In composite fish culture a combination of
five or six fish species is used in a single fish
pond. These species are collected so that
they do not compete for food among them
having different types of food habits.
When the fish are ripe, fish can be squeezed
to release eggs and milt.

Once the eggs are fertilized they

are laid down on trays to incubate.
The eggs will develop but
are very delicate until they
are eyed.

They will hatch in February but

have a lot of growing yet to do.

EGGS

The hatched fish are called

alevins and they will remain in
the incubators until they are
ready to swim up.
When fish first feed (May and
June), it is a very tricky time.
They have to learn how to
eat. If they dont learn, they
will starve.

ALEVINS

Fish that learn to feed will be

called fry.
These fish are very
important. They have
survived high mortality
stages and need to grow.
There are many new
dangers for these fish
disease, parasites, over
crowding.

FRIES

After a summer of growth the

fry will become parr.
These parr will over winter
and if they have grown
enough, will smoltify in the
Spring.

PARR

The rates of smoltification

are very important.Fish need
to be prepared for the ocean.

SMOLTS

Smolts will grow in sea

cages in bays that are free
of ice (and remain above
zero degrees).
The fish will be fed a large
amount of food.
If the fish grow well, they
will reach market size in 18
months.

Considerations
Fish are delicate. They
are stressed easily and
must be fed good food
on a regular basis.
Parasites are common
and some can lead to
serious secondary
infections .

Selecting a farm site is

the most important
decision of the whole
venture.
There are many legal
and environmental
considerations also.
Fish farms can produced
large amounts of solid
wastes.
