Parody
Parody is present in the
video because the explosion
as Psy walks towards the
camera makes fun of
Hollywood clichs in movies.
The random romance at the
end of the video also makes
fun of music video romance
clichs. Both examples are
extremely exaggerated to
give an impression of how
Western music videos are
viewed in Korea and are
intertextual references to
other music videos.

Simulation
Simulation is present. We think
hes on a beach at the start but
then its revealed that hes in a
playground to give the
impression that Psy is trying to
live a life of a celebrity in this
music video but in reality, hes
the opposite.
The editing specifically is the
main way to show that its
simulated such as the editing
matching the beat of the music
and the jump cuts between
different locations juxtaposes
how celebritys life is generally
chaotic.

Hybridity
The combination of
romance, comedy and
action genres creates
a postmodern vibe in
the music video which
appeals to a mass

The hyper reality of the video exaggerates and
parodies the life of a celebrity combining it with
the idea that middle class people living the life
of a celebrity shouldnt happen. A child dancing
for a grown man gives the impression that Psy
is making fun of how the elite abuse their
power. Psy sitting in a sauna with mobsters and
resting on the mans shoulder plays with the
idea of postmodernism because anyone of any
culture can interact with each other.
