Advantages

Bandwidth
Fiber optic cables have a much greater bandwidth than metal cables.
And hence data rate is high.

Low Power Loss

An optical fiber offers low power loss.
This allows for longer transmission distances.

Interference
Immune to electromagnetic interference or noise.

Weight
Fiber optic cables are much thinner and lighter than metal wires.
It makes easy to install.

Safety
The fiber is a dielectric, it does not present a spark hazard.

Flexibility

An optical fiber has greater tensile strength than copper of the same
diameter.
So it is flexible, bends easily.

DISADVANTAGES
Cost
The Cables and interfaces are relatively more expensive than

those of other guided media.

Protection
Optical fiber require more protection around the cable
compared to copper.
Unidirectional light propagation
if we need bidirectional communication ,Two fibers are needed .
