Usage of straight cooking oil

as an alternative to
petroleum diesel
Aileen Tan

The Problem

Non-renewable sources are not enough

Fossil fuels are being consumed way too fast
The Philippines is in the process of being an
industrialized country, therefore we have a high demand
for oil

The Problem

Biodiesel
Old Solution

Straight
Vegetable Oil
New Solution

SVO
Cooking oil

Biodiesel
Plant fat or animal oil that has alcohol added to it and
glycerine removed (transesterification)

Biodiesel vs. SVO

YES!
Top Gear made an experiment with a Volvo 740
The engine started and the car drove on

Can we use SVO directly

into the tank of a car ?

[as conducted by Mythbusters]

Fuel Economy using regular diesel: 33.3 mpg
Fuel Economy using SVO: 30 mpg
Only 10% difference!

Car engine performance

with SVO

Car engine performance

with SVO

No.
Dr. Avinash Kumar Agarwal conducted a research on the
scope and limitations of utilizing vegetable oils as a
substitute to diesel in powering engines
Engine used: ordinary type (4-stroke, single cylinder,
constant speed, direct injection, compression ignition, 7.4
kW rated power, 948cc)
Result: no expected operational problems

Will SVO harm the

engine?

Boeing + Commercial Aircraft

Corporation of China (COMAC) deal
use waste cooking oil as fuel for their jets
power the 6000 or more new airplanes
China-U.S. Aviation Biofuel Pilot Project (facility that
demonstrates the process of removing contaminants from
waste oil)

Current Applications

Jeepneys
Engr. Chips Gueverra
Before: Php 1300 / day (PRC to Mantrade route)
Now: Php 400 / day

Current Applications

Everyday People
Dr. Henry Adapon
Before: Php 600 / day (Quezon to Makati, and back)
Now: Full tank can last up to 2 weeks

Current Applications

Disadvantages:
Filtering the oil is time consuming

Advantages:

SVO is nearly as efficient as petroleum diesel

Cheaper
Increased engine mileage
Environmental friendly
