WIND TUNNEL
The concourses are effectively open
areas
with high ventilation rates, but the
panels are
designed to give some protection from
the
elements. The design reduced the
requirements
in the HVAC and Fire Protection
Systems,
achieving benefits in the form and cost
savings
together with a shortened programme.
The entire solution was tested in wind
tunnels
to ensure performance, and modelled
on
CFD simulations to evaluate HVAC and
Fire
Protection.

SOIL TYPE
The soil is predominantly composed
ofmesozoicmaterials
(limestone,sandstone, andmarl)
sedimented over a primitivepaleozoic
base.

BUILDING ENCLOSURES
Building Facades
The faade and roof form an elliptical
shell made of white and transparent
films.
The faade is made of a tensioned
single ETFE layer inscribed in a
twisted steel frame.
The faade of the new San Mames
consists of an envelope made of
vertical louvers comprised by
semitransparent milky ETFE films.
The 90-degree
twisting of these
modules increases the
relationship between
the stadium activity
and its urban
surroundings. The
repetition of the
modules confers
rhythm, scale and
dynamism to the

Difficulties and measures during construction

Athletic Club of Bilbao is one of the biggest clubs in European football.
Its former stadium enjoyed legendary status and was home to the club
for over 100 years and was popularly referred to as the Cathedral of
Football. Located adjacent to the existing stadium, the new
stadium overlaps the old. This meant its construction had to be
carried out in two phases in such a way that the team always had
somewhere to play. One of the main challenges in the design of the
New San Mames Barria stadium was to replicate the intense and
magical football atmosphere of the old Cathedral of Football.
To achieve this new stadium, which can accommodate over 50,000
spectators, incorporates the latest technology to provide improved
facilities and comfort to one of the biggest fan bases in Spain, whilst
also providing the operators with increased efficiency and manageability
