AUDIENCE RESEARCH

RESULTS FROM QUESTIONNAIRE

WHAT GENDER ARE YOU?

With my research out of 20 people asked
60% were male and 40% were female (12
male and 8 female). There is only a slight
difference in the gender of my target
audience. This tells me that I dont have to
include certain aspects to only
accommodate one gender, I can create the
magazine so that it is split between both or
even just neutral. This means that I can
chose colour schemes and language which I
think would be best, instead of changing it
to favour a gender.

My audience for this research question

showed that 80% of my audience were
aged between 16-19, and 15% were aged
between 20-25. Evident by the research,
my target audience is aimed at a younger
audience. Primarily focusing on the 16-19
age group as it is the mass of my audience.
This is helpful because it shows to me what
type of lifestyles this audience has. For
instance, a demographic example of this
age group is that they care about
appearance and keeping up to date with
trends. This type of information is useful to
depict what kind of content I should
include, such as competitions for gigs.
Things that will entice my audience, so I
will take in to consideration what things my
audience like to enjoy for recreational time.
And try to include content based around
things like that, or even simply using
language more familiar with this generation

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE GENRE OF

MUSIC?
The results for this showed that the most popular
genre was Pop music at 45%, however Rock was
also popular at 30%. Including content based
around these genres would make the magazine
more appealing to my target audience. My intention
was to create a multi genre magazine, this question
tells me that my audience would like to see content
based around the Rock and Pop genres. This
question is important for my magazine because I
want to include articles that will be the most
enticing for my audience. The purpose of the
question was to see what my target audience
favoured for music. From what I have found out
including bigger articles on the integral genres, or
multiple articles will make the magazine appealing.
Such as including band interviews with artists of the
pop genre, considering it was the most popular
genre.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ARTISTS?

With this question I found that the most popular artist was The Chainsmokers with 35%, and
second was Eminem with 20%. This evidence can be again useful for content, as I could
make sections that are about the artist or the genre of the popular artists. This is because it
will give more information/gossip about the artists popular amongst my target audience. I
may also want to accommodate the other artists also given, so that I can satisfy the
population of my target audience the best I can. This perhaps means including more content
on the popular artists and genres, and not as much content on the less favoured genres and
artists.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU READ MAGAZINES?

75% of my target audience do not read
magazines, despite being fans of music.
This could suggest that there are issues
with my audience to obtain a magazine.
Perhaps with cost or accessibility to a
newsagents, etc. This given me an idea of
what I should do to make my audience
want to purchase my audience. It helps
me make decisions on first impressions,
and how if the front cover looks desirable
then maybe my target audience would be
inclined to purchase it. I could also
consider cost and accessibility to my
magazine, to further increase the appeal.

Question 6

NME

Kerrang

Metal Hammer

Both Metal Hammer and Kerrang received 40% by

my target audience, with 20% for NME. This can
give me an idea to look at these magazines, and
see how they have been constructed and how
certain aspects are used for effect. Which could give
me some inspiration for my own magazine, and
incorporate similar techniques also. With the
question I wanted to find out what style of
magazine my audience enjoyed, so then I can
review them and take not on language and
presentational devices. Such as colour schemes,
and how typography is used to stand out.

With this question I found that my target

audience thought that 2-2.99 was the
most reasonable price with 40%. However
25% of my audience said that 3-3.99 was
also a reasonable price. If I take into
account the amount of people from my
audience that dont buy magazines, which
could be because of cost issues. I could
make the magazine a slightly lower price,
so that my target audience would be more
inclined to buy it. As the psychographic
lifestyle of my target audience mostly
consists of college related activities or
socialising, therefore conventionally most
dont have much money. Which is why
making the magazine a lower price would
invoke more response from my audience.

WHAT TYPE OF CONTENT WOULD YOU LIKE

THE MAGAZINE TO INCLUDE?
The most popular answer given was reviews with
30% of my audience, although interviews also
came in popular at 25%. I could feature all of
these elements in my magazine, but give priority
to the more favoured aspects by giving them
more space in the magazine. I could also consider
the popular genres, and base both the popular
genres and the popular content elements. For
example to take Pop which was the most popular
genre, and take the most popular content aspect
which was reviews and create content on that.
Therefore this would act as a higher incentive for
my audience to purchase it. I wanted to find out
what my audience wanted to see in a magazine. It
helps me decide on what contents to make
priorities, such as including cover lines on the
popular articles to attract audience attention.

HOW DO YOU GET INFORMATION ABOUT

NEW MUSIC?

Evidently by my research the most popular method was using the internet which
consisted of 85% of my target audience. This was to be expected as the majority of my
target audience is aged between 16-19. The psychographic information about this age
group is that they constantly are using the internet, and it is a social normality to spend
numerous hours on the internet everyday. Reference to question 5 again, the majority
of my audience do not read magazines. This means that if I were to make the magazine
accessible online, then it could make my target audience more persuaded to buy it. As
they can purchase it and read it on their phones in the comfort of their home without

DO YOU PREFER MAGAZINES THAT COVER

A SINGLE GENRE OR MORE?
The question showed that 70% of my audience prefer multiple
genres in a magazine. This is useful because my magazine will be
including multiple genres, which I know now that this is what the
majority of my audience want to see. However the remaining 30%
prefer magazines that are just one genre. This could mean that I
could include specific content on just one genre. For example,
interviews with artists of the rock genre. Although the majority of
my audience prefer all the genres combined into one magazine.
Which forces my hand to continue to include content aspects on all
of the genres. If there was more people in my audience who
wanted this then I would consider a different approach to suit my
target audience. This question is useful because it helps me decide
on what elements I can include that will appeal to my audience.
Such as cover lines containing articles on bands of varied genres,
to appeal and reach out to the most amount of people.
