What is Electronic Waste?

E-Waste is a shortening of
electronic waste.
Any improperly disposed
electronics can be
classified as e-waste.

Sources of E-Waste:

WHY IS E-WASTE A
PROBLEM?

It contains more than 1000

different substances, which fall
under hazardous and nonhazardous categories.
Broadly, it consists of ferrous
and nonferrous metals, plastics,
glass, wood & plywood, printed
circuit boards, ceramics, rubber
and other items.
Iron and steel constitutes about
50% of the e-waste followed by
plastics (21%), non ferrous
metals (13%) and other
constituents.

India is the fifth biggest producer of e-waste in the world,

discarding 1.7 million tonnes (Mt) of electronic and electrical
equipment in 2014, a UN report has warned that the volume
of global e-waste is likely to rise by 21 per cent in next three

How Can You Help?

Preventing waste in the first place is the preferred management option

Encourage and facilitate organized recycling systems
Collect fee from manufactured/consumers for the disposal of toxic material
Incentive schemes for garbage collectors and general public for collecting and handling
over e-waste
Awareness programme on e-waste for school children and general public.
There are two small e- waste dismantling facilities functioning in Chennai and Banglore.
