Lets see what you know about Forces and

Motion!
Come up with 3-5 things you can push and
pull. Draw and label them.

Motion

This bus is in motion. It moved

from one place to another.
Objects are in motion
everyday.

Question: If this was a

real bus, how did it start
in motion?

2.The motor
3.No reason

What is force?

Force is a push or pull needed

to start an object moving.

Think about a door. The door will stay in

the same place unless something like your
hand or the wind pushes or pulls it closed.

Question: Is it possible
for an ant to move a
brick?
1.Yes
2.No

Incorrect!

Correct!

No, an ant isnt strong enough to move a

brick. For an object to move, the amount
of force has to be strong enough to move
it.

Describing Motion

Now that we know what

motion is and force causes
motion, lets talk about how to
describe it!
You can describe motion with 3 types of
words:

1.Type of motion
2.Speed
3.Direction

Type of Motion Words

These words describe what kind of motion
it is:

running

jumping

skiing

climbing

Speed Words
These words describe the speed of the
motion:

fast

quick

slow

rapidly

Direction Words
These words describe the direction of the
motion:

left

up

sideways

north

Question: How would you

describe the type of
motion this rabbit is
doing?

1.Hopping
2.Rolling
3.Swimming

Incorrect!

Correct!

The type of motion is hopping!

Question: How would you

describe the speed of a
turtle?
1.Quick
2.Fast
3.Slow

Incorrect!

Correct!

The speed of a turtle is slow!

Question: What direction

are these fish
swimming?
1.Right
2.Left
3.Up

Incorrect!

Correct!

The direction the fish are swimming is

left!

Magnets

Magnets are
made of Iron and
other metals.
They can make
things move
without touching
them.
They can attract
some metals but
not others.
Some Magnets are
stronger than

Review
Motion occurs when an object moves from
one place to another.
For motion to occur, there has to be a
force on the object.
A force is a push or pull.
The force has to be stronger than the
object.
Magnets can make things move without
touching them and they can attract other
metals toward them.
