LEED Certification Research

Jacob Werley

Leed is a rating system devised by the United States

Green Building Council to evaluate the environmental
performance of a building and encourage market
transformation toward sustainable design.

There are there levels of Leed

Certification. The first is the entry level
certified, the second is silver, the
third is gold and finally the final and
highest Leed certification is platinum.

To get the certified level you must score a 40-49 points on your design. Silver rating consists of 5059 points. Gold consists of 60-79points, and Platinum rating is 80+ points.

The typical calculated energy saving is around 30%

depending on your use of energy, the carbon savings is
in the range of 30-35%, the typical water savings you
maintain is from 30-50%. And the final waste savings if
anywhere from 50-90%.

On the map shown below are some of the

states that support or require the certification
of Leed. Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia are the
only consecutive states that do not require or
follow Leed certification.

The picture shown above is a picture of a new

environmental center on a piece of land that stretches
84 acres on a preserve. This is built in New Jersey. This
building contains classrooms, a laboratory, conference
rooms, a gift shop and also has a pavilion. This building
is platinum certified because it has on site renewable
energy with a roof mounted solar array and an electrical
heat pump system. They use a lot of windows to use
natural sunlight instead of artificial light.

Some big name companies like Starbucks have successfully built over 1,000 Leed certified stores
