Third G rade O bservation

Kim Murrays Class Rivercrest Elementary

G roup Activities
One of the first things I got to observe was the class
working together in groups. They were writing down
details they thought were important in the short story
they had read as a class.
Even though they are in 3rd grade some of them did not
work together very well. They also were not good at
keeping the voice levels down, but in the end they all got
to see what each person payed attention to most in the
story.

Vocabulary
On my next visit they were working on Vocabulary, since
it was the end of the week they knew them pretty well.
These were easy words for me but thinking about these
word when I was in the 3rd grade brought to my realization
just how much more is expected from them now.
I mainly just called out words and they told me the
meanings, which helped them to study for the test they
would take that afternoon.

W riting
On my next visit the classes were scheduled to write
letters to Santa. On the board was a black ornament that
said Santa Cam to help the kids behave well, thinking
Santa was watching.
Most of what I was asked was how to spell things by the
students while Mrs. Murray was helping other students
around the room, but just seeing what a small decoration
at the front of the room did to improve behavior was
breath taking.

M ore w riting
Once again writing, since that is one of the subjects Mrs.
Murray teaches. Being that they are young and not the
best spellers I was again asked how to spell almost any
holiday word you can think of, including licorice.

Coloring
As a reward for writing a paper the students got to color
an ornament that would be hung on the classroom
Christmas tree. I actually got to observe on this one by
just walking around and watching, until one little girl
asked if I wanted to color an angel.
