Journal #10 11/30/16

Some ethical dilemmas that have come about in the third grade classrooms have been
handled in many different ways. Some things have been handled in ways I agree with, and
some things have been handled in ways I do not agree with. There was a fight in gym class one
day when I was there. The physical education teacher handled the situation very well. Both of
the boys got sent to Mr. Gomez to explain why they were fighting. Mr. Gomez handled the
situation like he should have. Both of the boys got in school suspension the rest of the day. The
boys then had to write a letter to the gym teacher and apologize for fighting in class and
distracting their classmates. Something that came up and how it was handled would not have
been how I would have handled it. There were a group of students that were bullying the new
boy because he did not have any friends yet. The teacher that saw this happening did not
handle the situation accordingly. She took the new boy away from the group of students that
were picking on him. She made the new boy feel safe by introducing him to different students to
hang around, but did nothing to the students that were originally bullying him. Bullying is a big
thing in elementary education and the bullies should be taken care of accordingly. At a young
age like that they should not be able to get away with this, because they will continue to do it the
rest of their lives.
Week In Review:
Monday of last week when I was at Lindbergh I did small group math activities with Mrs.
Goodrichs students. They enjoyed them because I was put with the students who actually want
to work and learn how to do things. They are learned how multiply double digit numbers with a
single digit number. Most of the students know how to do this and are pretty confident in it,
others need a little help and then they can finish the problem. Other students struggle with
multiplying because they do not know how to add or subtract, which then makes it hard to
multiply.
Tuesday of last week I was in Mrs. Paulys classroom, but not for very long because I went
back to Goodrichs room to read her class two Thanksgiving books. The class had to determine
how the books were the same and how they were different. One of the differences was that one
of the books was a rhyming book and the other was not. One of the similarities was that they
both talked about being thankful, and the things you should be thankful for. I also did this same
activity in Mrs. Winschers room on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday I went to Mrs. Baumgartners
class and Mrs. Paulys class. Each class seemed to enjoy this activity as for some classes it
was a treat to be able to be read to.
Wednesday of last week I was in Mrs. Baumgartners classroom and they did not do much
because everyone was wound up and ready for Thanksgiving break. However, they did watch a
video on the Mayflower and how many people were on it and the importance of it all.
Monday of this week I was in Mrs. Goodrichs classroom. I did some small group things with
the students who need a little more help. I read them their story out of their storybook for the
week. They had to stop me when I read a vocabulary word and as a group they had to define
the word. As a group they only missed one vocabulary word.

Tuesday of this week I was in Mrs. Paulys classroom. I did some more small group things
with the more advanced students this time. They are reading a book called Star in the Storm.
When they read the book they are to read a page or two and the person next to them has to ask
the person who read a question and they have to answer it to the best of their ability. They can
go back into the text to find the answer.
