Mobile Schools

Concept popularised by McDonald


Otherwise known as schools without walls
Obtaining self experience in a social setting
Directly involve in them by personal participation
Some responsibilities could be assigned to parents as

in the philosophy of Deschooling the society

Floating University
It is the extension of the concept of mobile school
First floating university Shipboard University
S.S Universe, 461 students of USA, 70 teachers
Visited 13 ports situated in 10 countries of the world
Arrived Chennai in 1978
To complete one semester, they travelled for 100 days

in the ship
When they landed in port, they visited socially and
culturally significant places in and around port city
This method of imparting education is highly expensive

Alternative schools-Dalton plan


It was introduced by Miss Helen Pankhurst in 1908
It was a study plan based on Instructional contracts
1919, Pankhurst opened a small school in the town

of Dalton in the State of Massachusetts.


This study plan based on the Montessori method
wherein pupils can progress at their own speed
Applied for std IV and above
No classrooms, only subject laboratories headed by
experts
Each child for each subject get Assignment cards
He/she will help the students during free hours only

Howard plan resembles largely Daltons plan in its

style of functioning
Students are classified in vertical groups Houses
Each subject is divided into stages
Each stage there are Class subjects and Card subjects
Each child is considered to belong a house
Each house has House mistress is specially trained
In the same house we can see pupils with different
ages with different levels of progress attained

Alternative schools- Platoon system


It was organized by William Wirt, Indiana, USA
The platoon system divided school into two groups
A group received instruction in the 3Rs for 2 hours

daily
B group studied subject like arts and games
The two groups interchange their activities
periodically and get involved in learning in a more
practical way
Wirt adopted Deweys idea of education
