Theneuronisthecellresponsiblefor
transferringinformationandelectrical
impulsesaroundthebody.

FUNCTIONOFNEURONS.
Neuronshavetheabilityto
communicateaccurately,quicklyandat
alongdistancewithothercells,whether
theyarenervous,muscularorglandular.
Throughtheneuronstransmitelectrical
signalsdenominatednerveimpulses

NEURONALSTRUCTURE
The brain is made up of approximately
100 billion nerve cells, known as
neurons. Neurons have the incredible
ability

to

store

and

transmit

electrochemicalsignals-asiftheywere
thewiresanddoorsofacomputer

PARTSOFANEURON
Somaorcellbody:Correspondstothemostvoluminouspartofthe
neuron.Hereyoucanseeasphericalstructurecallednucleus.This
containstheinformationthatdirectstheactivityoftheneuron.In
addition,thecytoplasmisfoundinthesoma.Initarelocatedother
structuresthatareimportantforthefunctioningoftheneuron.

Dendrites:Areshortextensionsthatoriginatefromtheneuralsoma.Its
functionistoreceiveimpulsesfromotherneuronsandsendthemto
thesomaoftheneuron.

Axon:Isauniqueandlongextension.Sometimesitcanmeasureupto
onemeterinlength.Itsfunctionistodrawtheimpulsefromthe
neuronalsomaandleadittoanotherplaceinthesystem.

TYPESOFNEURONE
1.-SENSORYNEURONS:transmitnerveimpulsestothespinalcord
andbrain.
2.-MOTORNEURONES:carrythenerveimpulsefromthebrainand
themarrowtothemusclesandglands.
3.-MULTIPOLARNEURONES:theyhaveoneaxonandseveral
dendrites.
4.-BIPOLARNEURONS:onlyhaveoneaxonandonedendrite.
5.-UNIPOLARNEURONS:Unipolarneuronscontrolthesecretionsof
theexocrine(sweat)glandsandthecontractibilityofthesmooth
muscle.Theyhaveasingledoublesenseextension,whichactsboth
asadendriteandasanaxon(inputandoutput)
