How have the Aborigines

been treated?

Aborigine people
lived a peaceful
hunting lifestyle
for more than
65,000 years on
Australia.

When the British arrived in

January 1788, they
completely ignored the
beliefs that the Aboriginal
peoples had about the land.

British leaders
began to sell
land to white
settlers which took over
holy sites, hunting
grounds and food supplies
for Aborigines.

Many Aboriginal
people died in
violent fights
over land, a lot
also died from no
food as their land
had been taken.

Within weeks of the

British arriving in
Australia they
brought with them a
number of diseases
including
chickenpox,measlesa
ndflu. Many
Aborigines died from
these unknown
diseases.

Now that many

Aborigines had lost
their homes they were
forced into church
camps. Many younger
aborigines were
taught about the
Christian faith and
became Christians.

From the time they

first arrived in
Australia, the
British had
attempted to make
the aborigines
wear clothes,
attend church and
educate their
children.

In 1930, they forced aborigines to live

in the same way as the British. This
led to many children being forcibly
taken away from their parents and
families and placed in foster care.
These children have become known as
theStolen Generation.

While most Indigenous

Aborigine people now live a
modern way of life, their
strong spiritual
connection to the land, from
their beliefs and lifestyle,
have remained as key
features of their culture.
