ARCHITECTURE HAS BEEN INTEGRAL

PART OF OUR EXISTENCE
ITS AN ART OF CREATING A SPACES
WHICH EFFECTS OUR LIVES ON
SOCIAL,PSYCHOLOGICAL AND
EMOTIONAL ASPECTS.
THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A RICH
CONNECTION BETWEEN ONES
CULTURE AND ARCHITECTURE.
OUR ANCESTORS HAVE EVOLVED
VARIOUS WAYS FOR PLANING A
SPACE ACCORDING TO THEIR
BELIVES,CLIMATOLOGY AND
TOPOGRAPHY.

WHAT ARE THESE BELIEVES BASED

ON?
It's an holistic approach to
building design and
construction.
Its a beautiful mixture of
science, art , astrology ,
shapes ,magnetic waves and
astronomy.
Its a relation between human
and its cosmic energy , to sync
ones energy with the energy
generated by its surroundings.

VASTU SHASTRA is a voluminous

and scattered ancient Indian
literature dealing with knowledge
of architecture, iconography and
art relating to structures and
buildings. Practiced in India,
since eternity.
The word VASTU has been
derived from VASTOSHPATI used
in RIG VEDA and is meant to
provide protection, happiness
and prosperity in this life as well
as after death.

Vastu Purusha is present in each and every plot whether big or small.
He has a fixed and peculiar body. His head remains hanging down and his body is spread all over the
length and breadth of the ground.
The Vaastu Purush is the presiding deity of any site. Usually he is depicted as lying on it with the
head in the North-East and the legs in the South-West but he keeps changing his position throughout
the year.
The Vaastu Purush lies with his back up. The concept may be that the burden is carried on the back.

The panchmahabhootas are

related to our five
senses of smell, taste,
hearing, touch and
sight. Any imbalance in
our external and
internal Vaastu
translates into unhappy
situations.

VASTU SHASTRA
PRITHVI
(EARTH)

The Earth revolves

around the Sun and has
gravitational and
magnetic force.
Scientists have proved
that earth is a huge
magnet with two polesNorth pole and South
pole.
So do humans. As we all
know, opposite poles of
a magnet attract each
other and same
magnetic poles repel
each other. The Vastu
principle of placing the
head in South direction
while sleeping is based
on earth's magnetic
property.

JAL (WATER)

Vastu provides
important information
about the placement of
water sources like
wells, boring,
underground water
tank, overhead water
tank etc, while
planning the house.
Positions for drainage
of water, septic tanks,
sewerage, drains etc.
are decided carefully to
optimize the benefits of
water element.

AGNI (FIRE)

When the Sun rays

combine with water,
they get additional
benefits. it is, therefore,
recommended to have a
water source in NorthEast direction.
To block North-East
corner of your building is
depriving yourself of
most beneficial rays of
Sun and has adverse
results. The ultra-violet
rays normalize the
metabolism of the body.

VAYU (AIR)

Vastu
recommends
proper placement
of doors,
windows,
ventilators,
balconies, height
of structure and
placement of
trees and plants
for balancing the
Air element
within the
structure.

AAKASH
(SPACE)

It is related to our
sense of hearing,
in a house, space
element is related
to the centre
portion or the
brahmasthan. It is
important that
brahmasthan be
kept open and
light. Any
disturbances in
the space
element affects
your growth

FENG SHUI
Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese practice
of harnessing the natural forces of
nature, to promote prosperity, harmony
and vitality.
This Chinese art of placement can help
you to create harmony, balance and
positive energy in your environment
through the proper placement of
furnishings, art, mirrors, objects, and
plants.
It is an ancient art of the power of
placement. Its principals are found in the
location of your building on your site, the
shape of that building, the layout of the
interior and placement of furniture.

DIFFERENT FENG SHUI APPROACHES

FENG SHUI

CLASSICAL

FORM

CONTEMPORA
RY

COMPASS

CLASSICAL FENG SHUI

Form
The form school is the oldest documented form of classical
feng shui. It was originally concerned with the placement and
orientation of tombs for the dead, and later its principals were
transferred to the buildings used by the living. It examines
and assesses the form of physical objects and shapes in the
natural and built environment, along with transformational
elements, chi flow and the manifestations ofyin and yang.

Compass

The classical compass school involves numerical

calculations based on the direction in which a building faces,
which is determined using a western compass or a Chinese
luo pan. Analysis is then based on the eight compass sectors
and the trigrams of the Ba Gua.
Birth dates are sometimes taken into account in certain
calculations that help to identify the relationship between
individual people and the energy pattern of the environment.

CONTEMPORARY FENG SHUI

A contemporarywestern interpretation
of feng shui has gained popularity,
particularly in America, since its
introduction in the 1970-80s. This
approach is based on the psychology of
how to achieve goals through a targeted
focus on the different aspects of life as
well as classical form school principles.
Feng shui is an art and has been called
the art of placement.
Feng shui is not a science, as itscore
concept havent been tested by
scientific method but this is changing.
There is a movement towards scientific
validation of feng shui.

PYRAMIDOLOGY
Pyramids have emerged as possessing ingenious
powers to cure persistent diseases and to
ceaseaccidentsif placed on roads.
Thestructureof pyramid is made in such a form
that it possessespositive powers to act as
curativeremedyfor all living beings and
renderingharmony & all round prosperity.

The pattern of pyramid is structured that it hasenergy at the

centre where Pyra means Fire and Mid is refer to centre.
The concentrated form of Pyramid has more than four sides
meets at one centre and this energy structure possesses
invasive powers that create equilibrium at the negative
place. Geometric pattern of pyramid is now followed by
allspiritual buildingsaround the world to constructtemple,
mosque, church and other religious place.

PYRAMIDOLOGY

Vastu-Shastra and feng shuihas also developed a norm to

employ the power of pyramid as a structure at the place
ofdefected site. Pyramid structure is avail in the market in
different forms as instrument ofVastuor fengshui that
have been known for treating defects at the non-Vastu site.
The introduction of pyramid as a synthesis power to rectify
Vastu or feng shui defects is precisely known as
pyramidology. Although Indian temples are made with a
dome at the top that is also a pattern of pyramid and
consideredauspicious. Pyramid attracts all the positive
energy from the surroundings and instills in the

environment
making it positive and simulative

SIMILARITIES
DIFFERENCES
They both use natural
as an elements of
design to incorporate
positive feel or vibes
into the space.
Both belive in cosmic
energy. i.e CHI
(human) and
QI(surroundings) in
feng shui and while in
vastu its prana .
Both use basic
mapping technique
for planning and
layout purposes.

Vastu is the precursor to Feng Shui.

Vastu is more scientific.
Vastu has a strict understanding about
Nature, whereas, Feng Shui has a flexible
understanding of nature.
Vastu insists that you cannot conquer
Nature but can merge into nature. Feng Shui
has elemental theories to overcome Nature.
For example, if your house is facing west
then you can place a mirror there to reflect
and rectify the mistake. However, Vaastu
says you cannot fool Nature with mirrors
and photos.
Vastu uses the five scientific elements: fire,
water, earth, air, and cosmic energy. Feng
Shui uses five elements also: water, metal,
wood, earth, and fire. Where is air and
cosmic energy in Feng Shui? Without air and
cosmic energy there is no motion nor is

ALL THESE ANCIENT CONCEPT OF

ARCHITECTURE HAVE THEIR OWN SCIENTIFIC
REASON AND IS FORMED IN CONTEXT WITH
THE TOPOGRAPHY AND CLIMATOLOGY OF
THAT REGION..
IT IS NOT A HUDDLE BUT A HELPING HAND
OR BASIC DESIGN CONSIDERATION WHICH
EVERY ARCHITECT MUST TAKE IN ACCOUNT
