Hours of Sleep

Elijah Jones and Joshua Robinson

Introduction
In this project we decided to compare the hours of sleep obtained
between both adults and students. The sample of population that this
project is comprised of is AMES students and adults of various locations.
(Streets, Stores, Teachers, etc.)

11 numbers were recorded of male and females for each of the

different populations (AMES students and adults).

This was an observational study.

The specific question that was asked was: How much sleep did you
get the previous night?

Our hypothesis was that students regardless of gender would have

less sleep than adults, females would across both students and
Specifics of Data Collection
The specific population(s) were of AMES students and random
adults. The students and adults we asked were people that we
preferably (and mostly) did not know. Not knowing our population(s)
helped to randomize the responses.

The question minimizes bias simply by the fact it only asks the
amount of sleep acquired. This question minimizes bias because
everyone requires sleep and most do sleep at least some every
night.

The samples we decided to use were convenience samples.

Analysis
The results show that most samples have very similar spread and
averages.

Adult Males get more sleep than most male students.

Adult males have a larger mean, median, and standard deviation.

Female students on average get sleep very similar to the adult

females.
The median and mean are very similar.

However the mode (numbers that occur the most) are different with females
students having most commonly 4-6 hours of sleep and the adult females
