1. Support Interaction Analysis

In order to present the concepts of rock
support interaction in a form which can be
readily understood, a very simple analytical
model will be utilised.
This model involves a circular tunnel
subjected to a hydrostatic stress field in
which the horizontal and vertical stresses are
equal.
The surrounding rock mass is assumed to
behave as an elastic-perfectly plastic
material as illustrated in the margin sketch.
