In what ways does your

media product use,

develop or challenge
forms and conventions of
real media products? (i.e
of film openings)
BY SOPHIA ANTON SELVARATNAM
Frame 1 :Title font and style
I've selected this as my first frame to discuss
how our title font adheres to the conventions
of thriller film.
The titling plays an important part by
allowing the audience a taste of the film
without revealing much. Whilst our film title is
called Two of a Kind We decided to have it
placed on a black background and the
continuation of the voiceover playing over.
The purpose of this was to create the
atmosphere of Thriller genre. The lettering
itself has a stained effect which highlights
the stained difference between the twins.
Moreover the fact the titling is in capital
letters is to emphasise the importance but
also the dark side of the film.

The font which is simple but effective as

many other thrillers such as se7en .The fact
that the letters arent fully in black are hints
Frame 2 : Setting/Location
The setting of our opening was filmed
inside a house. Since they were twins
who were separated from birth and
have two different lifestyles which we
portrayed through the shots. Since the
characters were reacting their morning
routine we can see through the different
visual representation of their
background through the choice of their
locations such as bathrooms and
Moreover, by choosing to do it in a house we hadkitchen.
a
lot of freedom in terms of changing the lighting,
making the house more messier and adjust it to
our needs where as if we used a public location we
wouldnt have that freedom.
Frame 3 : Costume and props
For this frame Ive selected to discuss about
costume and props. Since our genre was thriller
we had to carefully think about how we were
going to demonstrate that. This was done
through the costume as we chose to the
protagonist to wear a bright red t-shirt and
Adidas hoodie to convey the danger that they
are presented with. Also the fact that one of the
twins were seen to come from a deprived
background so we used stereotypical props
such as hoop earing and trainers and jeans
whilst the other twin worse a skirt, blouse and
heels to convey her wealthy background
Frame 4: Camerawork and editing
To create a thrilling opening we used
inspiration from Kill Bill to use the split
screen. This was particularly effective
as we were aware of each of the twins
actions and this created suspense as
some in sync which immediately
created the atmosphere of thriller.
Furthermore we used a variety of shots
to convey the difference in personality
and it would also suit the narrative of
the film. There is a lack of long shots as
we wanted to engage with the
audience through sharp shots which
gained the entire attention of the
audience. Whilst there was a flashback
occurring at the beginning of the film
with the voiceover it immediately
copulates the audiences through the
wide shots used.
Frame 5:How suspense is created.

This final frame depicts how suspense has been created as after the tension has built up as
were presented with half the face of a protagonist and know we have been shown with the
face of the protagonist. Through this closeup we finally realise they are twins. We are
supported with the voiceover and a non diegetic sound of faint nursery chimes which is played
faintly in the background to add to the tension.

This frame creates suspense as we finally are revealed who they are but the fact we dont
know where they are going, and the fact they are stepping outside the house highlights the
sign of urgency./ Moreover the fact the camera pans to find the protagonist looking into the
camera makes the audience feel uncomfortable.
Frame 6: Story and how the opening set it
up?

At the start of the film we wanted to show the

flashback of the protagonist and set the sense
of the narrative through the voiceover which
was telling the story however the purpose of
the home videos were to illustrate that the
twins were separated at birth and lived a very
different life. This is accentuated through the
opening shot of the twins looking in the mirror
and the mis-en-scene varying showing the
difference in personality and wealth.

The fact that the home videos are projected on

the backs of the twins demonstrates the two
personas of the twins however the fact they
are standing shoulder to shoulder conveys
their shared blood but parted by small mishap.
Frame 7 :Sound

We decided as a group we would use non diegetic sound, however we also decided to
add a voiceover which was inspired by Angela Carter to make our film sound
mysterious but also adhere to the thriller genre. The voice over was a voice of a 13
year old girl who had to put a American accent to allow the atmosphere to feel like a
thriller. The non diegetic sound was found on a copyright free website as nursery
rhymes. The track was repetitive and soft however held alot of tension. This conforms
to thriller genre as music is an important tool to create suspense builds up tension and
can reflect the action that is about to take place.
Frame 8: How the characters are introduced

Salt
(protagonist)
wearing Black
To introduce our main character we close up of the mirror with the character in the corner of the
mirror, we intentionally placed her in the corner of the mirror so the audience only knows half of
the characters person .The fact that they're both in the corner may also suggest that they are
hiding something that only they know and not the audience. The lighting in this scene is darker
towards the protagonist but lighter away from the protagonist which Illustrates the past that
they are unaware of as they were split from a young age.
In thriller gene protagonist are usually dressed in dark coloured clothing to remain unseen
however out character is wearing red which conforms to the genre .
Frame 9 :Special Effects
Lastly, as one of our protagonist is from a working
class background and portrayed to be deprived , we
wanted create a uncomfortable place of living. So
we used acrylic paints of several colour to produce
the colour of the water that you can see ( imagine
on the left , right screen) We used acrylic paint as
we realised it will be more effect and will give a
subtle but effect outcome.

The image at the bottom is a projection of childhood

videos. We used a projectors to create. This was
very effective as we could see how the childhood
video is projected on the backs of the twins to show
that the deprived on has know taken over the
wealthy twin lifestyle show there is a hidden facade
portrayed through this projection .
