2.2.2 Channel Modem

It translates VF to IF and IF to HF using Amplitude Modulation

single side band suppressed carrier technique.
Pilot signal (a continuous tone of 3.923 kHz) is generated in it
and is used for link supervision and AGC.
Signaling frequency of 3.825 kHz is also generated in this
Module and it is interrupted during dialing.
VF signal from VF Interface is passed through circuit consisting
of gain control, level adjustment, high pass filter (300 Hz),
compressor, low pass filter ( which can be either 2.0 kHz,
2.4 kHz or 3.4 kHz & accordingly DIU has also to be
either with BPF of 2160-3720 or 2640-3720 Hz), limiter
and summer Amplifier.
The summer amplifier mixes superimposed data, speech,
signaling and pilot tone and the output of it is fed to first
modulator; the IF carrier frequency of which is 4896 kHz.
The band pass filter of 4896-4900 kHz is used to pass upper
side band. This band is fed to the second transmit modulator.

The transmit carrier frequency can be programmed in the

range of 4392 kHz to 4864 kHz (with SW1 switch) so that HF
frequency can be programmed in the range of 32-508 kHz.
The upper side band is attenuated by using a low pass filter
before applying the HF signal to the HF amplifier.
The receiver section takes the input from the programmable
HF RX filter and the signal is applied to the receive HF
amplifier. After this the signal is demodulated from HF to IF.
The receive HF carrier frequency can be selected by switch
SW2.
Band pass filter rejects all other frequencies except the
desired band of 4896-4900 kHz.
This output goes to the IF amplifier which has built in AGC
circuitry. The second demodulator uses the 4896 kHz
carrier frequency to produce 0-4 kHz band.
A low pass filter (2.0 or 2.4 kHz) is used to prevent
superimposed data; pilot and signaling tones from
appearing at the VF (speech) receive side.
A notch filter of 3923 Hz (+/- 15 Hz) is used to separate
pilot from the combined VF receive signal.
A notch filter of 3825 Hz (+/-15Hz) filters out the signaling
tone. Rectification of this tone gives the dc level
corresponding to presence or absence of signaling tone.
This dc level is used to operate / release a relay (relay
contact) to give output on E-lead.
On the front plate, test points are provided for VF
transmit / receive, SID TX/RCV, PC IN/OUT and
Transmit/Receive pilot. The details of the LEDs and other
components are given on next slide

2.2.3 Data Interface Unit:

It provides the interface for three VF data channels.

It comprises of superimposed Data multiplexer and
Demultiplexer and Transit Band-Pass filter.
After the data is combined, it enters the channel modem as SID-
TX (Trans Superimposed Data).
SID-RCV (Superimposed Receive Data) from channel modem is
passed through a low pass filter of 3720 Hz. This signal is then
fed to the HPF, which is dependent upon the upper cut-off
frequency option (2.0 kHz or 2.4 kHz) in channel modem. These
two filters form the TBF(2160-3720 or 2640-3720 Hz).
If the frequency of data signal falls in speech band then the TBF
has to be by- passed.
To achieve the desired data levels in transmit and receive path,
adjust the attenuator pads for respective data channel in the
DIU as per header positions given in the literature.

disconnected including E and M wires.
2.5 Service Telephone Test:

Insert jack telephone in 5 pin socket at VF

interface. Green LED marked "Jack Telephone"
will glow.
Press Call-SW, the buzzer at other end operates
and RED LED (BUZ) will glow. A ring back tone
is heard at the calling end.
When the called party answers by inserting jack
phone in corresponding socket, RBT is stopped
and conversation can proceed. The operation of
buzzer can be adjusted by VR7 in VF Interface.
2.6 Remote Loop Test:

The system can be looped back from far end on

VF side by initiating commands at near end.
Both systems are disconnected from interfacing
units like exchange or telephones during this
test.
During Remote loop test, at remote end RXI gets
connected to TXI in data interface unit in
addition to 4W-OUT looping to 4W-IN.
2.7 Important points :-

In case of a single data tone, the data level is

normally 4 dB less than the pilot level on line i.e.
P=17 dB, D=+13 dB.
If there are 2 data tones, then D1=+12/+11 dB,
D2=+12/+11dB.
If there are 3 data tones then D1=+10 dB,
D2=+10 dB, D3 = +10 dB against P= +17dB
on line. However, the setting of data tone level
with reference to the pilot tone level is a matter
to be decided depending upon the link
requirements.
DIU module should not be blindly changed
because of the presence of band pass filter of
different bands (2280-3720, 2640-3720).
For exclusive data (no speech) KB2 is used. In this case
H6, H10 (2-3 short) and on H23, H26(2-3 short) has to
be ensured in Channel Modem. DIU is redundant in this
case.
In DIU Band Pass Filter TBF has to be by-passed by
putting short J3 (14)-H27 (1) in DIU if the data tone is
out of the TBF band.
For exclusive Datas PLC terminals signaling tone can be
stopped (by putting earth at M 3b-KB1) so that Power
Amplifier is not loaded.
Compander can be switched out of circuit by earthing 5a
at KB1 (compander control).
If KB1-5a is not earthed, then compander can be
switched out of circuit by H44 (1-2) and switched in the
circuit by H44(3-4) in Channel Modem. In headers,
point-1 is indicated by a dot.
2.8 If the output of channel modem at J6 is as
specified but the levels are low at dummy load,
then pilot level should be measured at the output of
power amplifier.For this:

Switch off the PLC terminal and remove the cable

connecting power amplifier to HF filter.
Switch ON the PSU and check the output of power
amplifier at BNC connector provided on the front plate of
Power Amplifier (levels have to be measured keeping level
meter impedance at 75 Ohm). Pilot level should be +20dB.
Switch OFF PSU and connect the cable removed in step (a)
above. Now remove the cable connecting HF filter output
to the input of HF Hybrid unit.
Connect SLM (impedance at 75 Ohm) at BNC of HF filter-
OUT.
Measure the pilot level. It should be +17dB (as nominal
loss of filter is around 3dB).
Switch OFF PSU, connect HF filter to HF Hybrid. Take out
HF break plug. Set the level meter at 150 Ohm
impedance and connect at UP/UP of HF break plug.
The pilot level at HF break plug at dummy should be +17
dB (as loss of HF Hybrid is 0.5 dB). Alternatively, measure
at MON of HF Hybrid with switch on LOAD side.
Switch off the PSU connect HF break plug to connect the
system to the HF line.
Measure the level on line. The level on line will be same
as level on dummy load if proper impedance matching
between PLC Terminal and HF cable/outdoor equipment.
Otherwise the level will be slightly lower than the level at
dummy load (say by 2 to 3 dB).
If level on line is higher than the dummy load level by 5-6
dB, then the HF cable is not connected to either PLC
terminal or the outdoor equipment.
