I am from Winchester, Hampshire. Winchester is a city in the


United Kingdom. I live in a town called Taunton which is on the
River Tone. I live in a house in a quiet street in the countryside.
The street is called "Hudson Street" and the house is old - more
than 100 years old! I am an English lecturer at a college near the
center of the town. I like books, music and taking photographs. I
usually have lunch at college. I usually go home by car. We have
all kinds of food in England. I like Italian food very much.
Sometimes, I go to an Italian restaurant in Bath. The restaurant is
called "Magda's". Italian food is delicious!
Basic rules to use A, An
or The
a = indefinite article (not a specific object, one of a number of
the same objects) with consonant sound.
Eric has a dog.
Gregory works in a factory.
I hate using a uniform.

an = indefinite article (not a specific object, one of a number of


the same objects) with vowel sound (a,e,i,o,u).
Can I have an apple?
Donata is an English teacher.

the = definite article (a specific object that both the person


speaking and the listener know)
The car over there is fast.
The teacher is very good, isn't she?
The first time you speak of something use "a or an", the next time
you repeat that object use "the".
I live in a house. The house is quite old and has two bedrooms.
I ate in a Vietnamese restaurant. The restaurant was not very
clean.

Use the + adjective to talk about a group of people (including


nationalities).
I always give money to the homeless.
The unemployed receive money from the government.
The French produce good wine.

To talk about someone unknown use a + Mr. / Mrs. / Ms. + last


name.
Theres a Ms. Smith at the door.

Use the with buildings, except if the first word is the name of a
place (city, town).
The White House, The Sheraton Hotel.
Oxford University, Buckingham Palace.

DO NOT use an article when talking about a sport.


You can also use the with:

-Names of families.
The Johnsons are nice people.

-Titles of royalty or authorities.


The Prince of England.
The mayor of the city.

Except when they are accompanied by proper names:


Queen Sofia of Spain.

-Historical events.
The Russian Revolution.

DO NOT use an article when you are speaking about things in


general.
I like tea.
Simon likes reading books with interesting stories.
Use the with:
-Bodies of water, oceans and seas: the Baltic Sea.
-Points on the globe: the Equator, the North Pole.
-Geographical areas: the Middle East.
-Deserts, forests, gulfs, and peninsulas: the Sahara, the Iberian
Peninsula.

DO NOT use an article with countries, states or provinces, lakes


and mountains.
My uncle lives in Puno near Titicaca Lake.
They live in Lima.

Except when we talk about multiple areas:


A collection of states such as The United States.
A group of lakes like The Great Lakes.
Ranges of mountains like The Andes.
Island chains like The Canary Islands.

DO NOT use an article when you are speaking about meals and
transport.
He has breakfast at home.
