Indefinite articles

a / an

singular, countable nouns to refer to
a thing or an idea for the first time.



e.g. : We have a cat and a dog.


Use:

1) with professions
e.g. : Im a teacher.

2) with some expressions of
quantity
e.g. : a pair, a little, a lot

3) in exclamations with what+ a
countable noun
e.g. : what a lovely day!
Definite articles

the

singular and plural, countable and
uncountable nouns when both the
speaker and the listener know the
thing or idea already.

e.g. : The cat is old, but the dog is
just a puppy.

Use:

1) before seas, rivers, pubs, hotels,
theatres, museums and
newspapers
e.g. : The Sun, The Ritz

2) if there is only one of something
e.g. : The Queen

3) with a superlative adjective
e.g. : Janes the tallest in class.


No article

1) before plural and uncountable nouns when talking about things in general
e.g. : I like potatoes. I love cake.

2) before countries, towns, streets, languages, magazines, meals, airports, stations and
mountains.
e.g. : I had lunch in Paris.

3) Before some places and with some forms of transportation: on foot / at home / at
school / at or to work / by bus / by car .

4) In exclamations with what + uncountable noun.
e.g. : What beautiful music !
