1. Read the following rules for when we use the definite article (the), the indefi-
nite article (a /an) and for when we do not use an article (the zero article).
Then fill in the gaps and match each of the examples to one of the rules.
Examples
• The sky is full of stars tonight.
• When was the radio invented? / I think the whale may soon be extinct.
• Could you pass the salt please?
• The Amazon flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
• He is the kindest person I know.
• e.g. I live in a small house. / You will need a ruler in the exam.
• There is an apple and an orange. I want the orange.
• The British drink a lot of tea.
• She is a doctor.
• He was born in the United States not in the Maldives.
• I like tomato juice. / I hate cities. / Travel broadens the mind.
• I’m going to Oxford Street today. / I love living in Rome. / He comes from
Greece. / Where is Mount Everest?
2. Fill in the gaps in the following sentences with a, an, the or (- ) when
no article is needed. Try to work out other reasons for this.
