STARTING SYSTEM

In the case of a turbine engine, the starter must

turn the engine
up to a speed that provides enough airflow
through the engine
for fuel to be ignited. Then, the starter must
continue to help
the engine accelerate to a self-sustaining speed.
Turbine
engine starters have a critical role in starting of
the engine.

AIR TURBINE STARTER
Air turbine starters are
designed to provide
high starting
torque from a small,
lightweight source. The
typical air
turbine starter weighs
from one-fourth to one-
half as much
as an electric starter
capable of starting the
same engine. It
is capable of developing
considerable more
torque than the
electric starter.

AIR IMPINGEMENT STARTER

A type of starting
system for gas
turbine engines in
the which the initial
rotation to the
compressor is
produced
bycompressed water.
The compressed air is
supplied by either a
running engine or a
ground power unit
and is directed
ontothe centrifugal
compressor or
