CONCLUSIONS
 Tata Steel has reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 2,009 crores for the full
year ended 31 March, 2010 as against a profit of Rs 4.950 crores last year.
 Possible Reasons For Tata Steel’s Losses in FY10

High Raw Material Costs and a Slump in Demand: 2009 saw a declining

demand for steel as the real estate and construction companies witnessed a
slowdown .
Moreover, The steel makers have had to manage the increasing raw
material costs after workers introduced changes in the contracts governing
the mining of Iron ore
European Economy Crisis: The European economy crisis has been brewing
for quite sometime though it has surfaced only recently. Tata Steel derives a
majority 2/3th of its global capacity from it European operations and the
lack of demand from the region has led to losses for Tata Steel on
underutilization
However, Tata Steel managed to remain profitable for the quarter ending
March 2010 with a profit of Rs 2324 Crore as against Rs 473 in the same
quarter last year.
