VEGGIE UNIT
developed by Orbital Technologies Corp.
(ORBITEC)
plant growth unit capable of producing salad-
type crops
provides lighting and nutrient delivery, but
utilizes the cabin environment for temperature
control and as a source of carbon dioxide to
promote growth

FACILITY OPERATION
The pillows with seeds in them are installed on
to a root mat, in the Veggie Unit
Power is applied and water is added to the root
mat to begin seed germination. Water and
growth height is maintained throughout the
plant growth cycle until the vegetables are
harvested and the growth cycle can be
restarted.
PLANT NEEDS:
water
carbon dioxide
nutrients
gravity
PLANTS HARVESTED:
Red romaine lettuce
Zinnia Flowers
Thale cress
Lentils
Wheat
Soybeans
for the first time,
NASA has
managed to grow
red romaine
lettuce on the
international
space station
The veggie unit
includes red, blue
and green LEDs
for plant growth
and makes it
easier for the crew
to observe them.
The system also
may have
implications for
improving growth
and biomass
production on
Earth, thus
benefiting the
average citizen
