Introduction to Biology
By: Siti Irma Rahmawati S.Pi., M.Agr., Ph.D
Definisi
Biology : natural science concerned with
the study of life and living organisms
Bios = Hidup
Logos =Ilmu
What do biologists study
The interaction of life
The interaction with the environment
They study problems and propose
solutions (i.e. medical treatment,
disease prevention, etc)
Science vs
Pseudoscience
Science is a process for learning about the natural
world. Most scientific investigation involves the
testing of potential answers to important research
questions.

Pseudoscience is a claim, belief or practice which is

presented as scientific, but is not a product of
scientific investigation, lacks supporting evidence or
plausibility, cannot be reliably tested, or otherwise
lacks scientific status .
The process of science
Science is a very specific way of learning, or knowing,
about the world
The scientific method is a method of research with
defined steps that include experiments and careful
observation
The most important aspects of this method is the
testing of hypotheses
Hypothesis is a suggested explanation for an event,
which can be tested, to produces scientific theory

Organisms are able to maintain internal conditions
within a narrow range almost constantly, despite
environmental changes, through a process called
homeostasis or steady statethe ability of an
organism to maintain constant internal conditions
The tendency of an organism or cell to regulate its
internal conditions, such as the chemical composition of
its body fluids, so as to maintain health and functioning,
regardless of outside conditions. The organism or cell
maintains homeostasis by monitoring its internal
conditions and responding appropriately when these
conditions deviate from their optimal state. The
maintenance of a steady body temperature in warm-
blooded animals is an example of homeostasis. In human
beings, the homeostatic regulation of body temperature
involves such mechanism as sweating well as the
generation of heat through metabolic processes when the
internal temperature falls too low
