What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Commonly referred to as simply autism


Definition: A range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive
behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences.

There is not one type of autism. There are several different kinds caused by different combinations
of genetic and environmental influences.
Types of Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autistic Disorder (Classic autism)


Language delays, social/ communication challenges, unusual behaviors and interests

Asperger Syndrome
Milder symptoms of autistic disorder, unusual behaviors an interestshowever, typically do not have
problems with language or intellectual disability

Pervasive Developmental Disorder


Those who meet only some symptoms of either autistic disorder or Aspergers. Symptoms might
only cause social and communication challenges
Facts about Autism

Estimated Autism prevalence: ~ 1 In 68 children in the U.S. (1 in 42 boys & 1 in 189 girls)

One third of people with Autism remain nonverbal

One third have intellectual disability (includes below average intelligence and difficulty thinking and
understanding)

Symptoms of Autism tend to appear during the ages of 2 and 3.

Autism comes (not all the time) with medical and mental health issues
Autism and the Classroom

IEPs (Individualized Education Program): The IEP describes the students strengths and
weaknesses, sets measureable goals and objectives and provides details about the supports
and accommodations that will be used to meet them.

IEPs are formed by parents, teachers, therapists, psychologists, and special education
teachers
