Jobless for a year
Sandberg worked at the US treasury for five years, then when Bush was
elected and they were all out of jobs, she moved to Silicon Valley.
It was 2001, so the bubble had crashed and no one was hiring.
It took her a year to find the right job. Things began to look up, and
when Eric Schmidt hired her at Google

Handling Salary Negotiations


During her negotiations with Facebook, Sandberg was reluctant to ask for
more money since the remuneration package struck her as fair.
It was only when her brother-in-law and husband pointed out that no man
in her position would accept the first offer that she went back to the
table, and told Mark Zuckerberg that, since he was hiring her in part for
her negotiating skills, it would be a bad advertisement if she didn't use
them. She came out of the meeting with equity in Facebook.

When women demand something they are perceived as aggressive
The goal of successful negotiation is to achieve our objectives and continue to have
people like us.
First women must come across as being nice, concerned about others, and
appropriately female.
When women take a more instrumental approach (This is what I want and deserve),
people react far more negatively.
According to Professor Bowles, the second thing women must do is to provide a
legitimate explanation for the negotiation. One way of doing this is to suggest that
someone more senior encouraged the negotiation (My manager suggested I talk with
you about my compensation) or to cite industry standards (My understanding is that
jobs that involve this level of responsibility are compensated in this range). Still, every
negotiation is unique, so women must adjust their approach accordingly.

Work Life Balance

The move from Google to Facebook was scary. I was going from just
running sales and operations to running the whole business side.
Facebooks regular hours were often all-nighters.
Decided to come in early, work the hours, leave at 5:30 pm, spend time
with family and get back online later in the night.
Workplace flexibility helped her plan her day
Became much more efficient more vigilant about only attending or
setting up meetings that were truly necessary, more determined to
maximize my output during every minute
Also started paying more attention to the working hours of those around;
cutting unnecessary meetings saved time for them as well.
Her Leadership Qualities
Shes a Team Player
Sheryl Sandberg speaks fondly of every team she has joined from Google to
Facebook and others.
Team spirit motivated her to write the book Lean In and launch the Lean In
movement meant to encourage fellow female professionals to lean in to
their goals and achieve.
Sandberg and her Lean In team have established Lean In Circles, which
are online communities for female professionals. She describes Lean.org as
a global community where people can talk openly about pay for women,
work life balance and various issues. The movement also helps women form
groups of 8 to 10 people that are a support group.
She is even teaming up with Beyonce for a Ban Bossy Campaign.

She chose a path of public service in the government early in her career. In
fact, Sandberg thought she would always be involved in non-profit
organizations.
Even after transitioning to the technology field, Sandberg was still drawn
by a desire to help people. In interviews, she talks about the power of
technology to help people connect and how that ability has improved
peoples lives. She has always wanted to be a part of something powerful
in changing lives for the better.
Sheryl Sandberg knows that if she wants to realize her dream of placing
more women in more senior positions, she has to involve others, and she
has done that by encouraging women to be more proactive in their career
by stepping up, leaning in and owning their own success.

Shes Ambitious and has a powerful vision
Sheryl has always kept her eyes on big goals. Shes never backed down because
of fear or intimidation. Thats evident in her accomplishments and role as COO
at Facebook.
Her Lean In Movement aims to encourage women to discuss their work life
situations and how to succeed. Sandberg values ambition and personal
fulfilment so highly that she hopes to use the Lean In movement to help others
overcome their fears and succeed too.
She advises women to take responsibility for their career progression by taking
risks and advocating for their best interests. She articulates her vision by taking
it public and using her power and influence to get her message out.
Sandberg has faced heavy criticism not just from conservative men in the
business world, but other feminists, but she doesnt let critics, or her own
insecurities stand in the way.

Speak up about things that matter
The greatest leaders have the courage to stand up for the causes that
they believe in. Sheryl Sandberg dedicates much of her time to gender
issues, and she developed a strong point of view for her cause.
To get an audience for her cause, she went live and public by giving the
talk Why we have too few women leaders at TEDWomen 2010, and
wrote the book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, which
became an international bestseller.
She also spoke at various conferences, shared her strategies for making
it to high level positions in the workplace, and currently serves on the
board, Women for Women International.

Fortune favours the bold.
