DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

By: Angela, Alicia and Ines

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
The nutrients are substances which animals
and plants need in order to live and grow.
The digestive system is the group of organs
in the body which extracts the nutrients from
food and expels indigestive waste.
NOSE AND MOUTH
Saliva helps teeth crush food as we chew it.
THE OESOPHAGOUS
The tongue shapes the food into a ball called a
bolus. When we swalow it passes into the
oesophagous, a stretchy tube which links the
back of the throat with the stomach.
Epiglottis prevents the food from going down
the windpipe and into the lungs.
THE STOMACH
The role of the stomach is to break down
food. It do this by excreting gastric juices
which mix with the bolus.
THE SMALL INTESTINE
Once the food is dissolved into a liquid, it
passes into the small intestine. Here it mixes
with bile, which is produced by the liver, and
pancreatic juices, which are produced by the
pancreas. The food mixture is broken down
into carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins,
minerals and fats. The nutrients are absorbed
into the blood.
LARGE INTESTINE
The waste that our body doesnt need passes
to the large intestine. The solid waste leaves
our body through the anus.
