SPAR PLATFORM

Spar is a floating oil platform used in very deep
waters.
Introduction to SPAR
SPAR is the acronym for Single Point Anchor
Reservoir (SPAR).
A spar platform consists of a large-diameter, single
vertical cylinder supporting a deck..
The centre of buoyancy is considerably above center
of gravity making spar quiet stable.
Spar platform uses helical strakes to reduce vortex
induced motions.
Used in Ultra deep draft waters. The worlds deepest
platform is currently the Shells Perdido SPAR in
the Gulf of Mexico, floating in 2,438 meters of water.
Design Classifications
There are 3 basic designs for SPAR Platforms
1. Classic SPAR
2. Truss SPAR
3. Cell SPAR
Design Considerations
The bottom of the cylinder includes a ballasting
section with material that weighs more than water,
ensuring the center of gravity is located below the
center of buoyancy.
Four major components of a SPAR includes Hull,
Moorings, Topsides, Risers
SPARs are permanently anchored to the seabed by
way of a spread mooring system composed of either a
chain-wire-chain or chain-polyester-chain
configuration.
Natural period of SPAR

Spar platforms uses taut or

catenary mooring system and
have capability to be installed
in deep draught, hence have
heave natural period is about
30 sec.
Response Amplitude Operator
SPAR Applications
Spar platforms are mainly used for:

1.Drilling
2.Storage
3.Production
4.Offloading
5.Unmanned
Advantages
Simple design that can be easily fabricated.

Minimum number of welds.

Possibility of using concrete instead of steel.

Few active systems or complicated components.

Excellent stability.
Disadvantages
Only suitable for deep water sites (>80m) due to large draft.

Assembly in shallow water not possible.

Limited ability to tow the structure back to port for major repairs.

Fatigue load in tower and blades might be higher than for TLP.

Requires large drafts for onshore assemblies.
