Activity

Area is the measurement of the size or

extent of a surface.

S.I. Unit for area is SQUARE METRE (m2)

Other common units for area are mm2, cm2

and km2.

There are two kind of shape:

a. regular shape
b. irregular shape
Example 1:

1m
Area = X x X
X
= 1m x 1m
1m X 1m = 1m2

1m
Example 2:

Area = X x Y

= 2m x 0.5m

2m = 1m2

X 0.5m
Y
Example 3:

Area = x b x h

= x 6m x 2m

= 6m2

2m
h
b

6m
Example 4:

Area = r2
= 22/7 x (7)2

= 154m2

r=7
Example 5:

Number of square counted

=9

Area of each square

= 1cm x 1cm
= 1cm2

Estimated area of the shape

= 9 x 1cm2
= 9cm2
How to measure an irregular shapes?

a. Using a graph paper.

a. counted using the following method:

i. Count the number of complete squares

ii. An incomplete square is counted if half or

more of the square is covered

iii. Do not count an incomplete square if less than half

of the square is covered.
Example 1:

Number of square counted

= 12

Area of each square

= 1cm x 1cm
= 1cm2

Estimated area of the shape

= 12 x 1cm2
= 12cm2
Try to measure at home in graph paper:

1. An area of spoon shape

2. an area of your hand
