Topic 1: Workshop Safety

OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health
Association)
The effects of a persons job on their health and safety.

OR
The conditions in the workplace that could affect persons
health and safety.
OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health
Association)
The Act Occupational Health and Safety Act 1994 requires
an employee:
to take reasonable care at work for the safety of yourself and
other persons;
to co-operate with the employer or any other person in the
discharge of any duty, under the act or regulations;
to wear or use any protective equipment or clothing provided by

and health as required under the Act or regulations.
OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health
Association)
Penalty for failure to comply is:
RM1,000 or 3 MONTHS IMPRISONMENT or BOTH

OBJECTIVES
Identify personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing.
Identify the safety precautions before starting any work.
Apply the correct safety environment during working.
Perform the correct ethics in workshop.
Identify the safety signs
Identify the accidents usually occurs in workshop.
INTRODUCTION

Safety is the important factor when working in industry

which involves various types of machines.
Usually, new worker with less experience can easily be
involved in accident at work place.
All the precautions must be taken seriously to avoid any
accident during working.
Wear the personal protective equipments (PPE) when
you are in the working area.
Clothing & PPE
Clothing. Correct dress not only make you look smart
but also helps to avoid a hazard and disease. Change and
wash your clothing regularly as a dirty cloth can cause an
infection to your skin.
Long hair is a hazard in workshop environment. Keep
your hair short or close it in a suitable cap.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) includes a head, eye,
skin, hand and foot protection.
Good & Bad Clothing

1-Long and untidy hair

2-Button not clasp and sharp things

sticking out

3-Long sleeve unfold, wearing loose

clothing

4-Pocket with holes

5-Too long until it touch the floor

6-Not suitable for workshop

Head & Eye Protection
Safety helmet is used to protect head injury. Even a nut
and bolt can cause a serious head injuries if it is fall from
a high height.
Eye protection is one of the most important precaution.
Eye protection is provided by wearing a visor or goggles.
Hand Protection
Gloves is used in metal fabrication to prevent a serious cut
and injury due to metal sharp edges.
Plastic glove are impervious to liquids and suitable to handling
oils, greases and chemical.
Leather gloves is used when handling sharp, rough and HOT
material.
You must always wash your hand thoroughly after your work
and before handling or eating your food.
Hand Protection
Foot Protection
Safety footwear includes boots,
shoes, overshoes and slipovers
and should include one or
more of the following features:
Steel toe caps
Oil and solvent resistant soles
Heat- resistant soles
Antistatic soles
Steel soles plates
Anti- slips soles

Safety in Welding
Body protection
The welder must protect his/her
body and clothing from
radiation and burns caused by
flying globules of molten metal
(spatter).
The welder should wear flame
resistant overalls and protective
leather apron and gloves.
Safety in Welding
Ventilation
Welding rods used for manual metallic arc welding are
usually coated with a flux. Fume extraction is essential to
remove the fumes given off by the hot flux. This should be
designed so that the fumes are not drawn upwards
passed the welders face. Adequate general ventilation
should also be provided.
The flux solidifies to leave a hard coating of slag over the
weld zone that needs to be chipped off. When chipping,
clear goggles must be worn for eye protection.
Behaviour in Workshop
Behaviour in Workshop
Such behaviors shown can lead to;
Precautions Before Working
Superior
Inform all related personnel about the work to be
done.
Make sure all personnel involved are familiar with the
safety and emergency policies and procedures related
to the work.
Precautions Before Working
Working Environment
Neat
Clean
Well arrange
Eliminate and remove any hazardous
Floor free from debris or slippery fluids
Safety Signs
OSHA defines signs as "the warnings of
hazard, temporarily or permanently affixed
or placed, at locations where hazards exist."
Warning Signs
Identify and warn visitors, staff and public of possible
dangers and hazards.
Warning Signs
Warning sign are triangular in shape and all the sides are
the same length. The background colour is yellow and
there is black border.
Prohibition Signs
Instruct staff and visitors that certain behavior and
actions are prohibited,
Prohibition Signs
Prohibition sign has a red circular band and a red crossbar
on a white background.
Mandatory Signs
These signs display a specific behavior message or action
that must be carried out within a designated area.
Mandatory Signs
Mandatory sign has a blue background colour. The
symbol must be white.
Safe Condition Signs
For providing information about safety conditions.
Safe Condition Signs
For providing information about safety conditions.
Accident at workplace
Injury Reporting And Emergencies
The injuries cause by the accidents can range from minor
wound, bruises, burns and scalps, entrapment of foreign bodies
in the eyes.
How does an employee report a workplace hazard?

Section 28 (1) c, d explains;

28. (1) A worker shall,

(c) report to his or her employer or supervisor the absence of
or defect in any equipment or protective device of which
the worker is aware and which may endanger himself, herself
or another worker; and
(d) report to his or her employer or supervisor any
contravention of this Act or the regulations or the existence
of any hazard of which he or she knows.
Injury Reporting And Emergencies
Incident/accident
An accident with an injury that does not require any
intervention, i.e., does not result in any lost time or
requires physiotherapy, surgery, etc.
First aid injuries
An accident requiring minor treatment such as a bandage.
Health care injuries
An accident where a professional health care provider is
consulted and provides treatment.

Lost time injuries

An accident that results with an absence from work due
to the injury.
Injury Reporting And Emergencies
First Aid
Injury Reporting And Emergencies
Actions for Incident/ Accident or Injury
1. Employees should inform their supervisors.
2. Supervisors will then complete a Supervisors Report.
3. The Supervisor will contact a Health and Safety rep (worker
member).
4. The worker member will investigate the
incident/accident/injury, providing direction as necessary.
5. The worker rep, the Supervisor and if possible, the
employee, will sign off on the Supervisors form.
Injury Reporting And Emergencies
As you go to your daily work (or workshop),
if you spot things that could hurt people or damage
equipment or the environment;
you MUST report to your superior/ manager (or lecturer/
technician) ;
Any hazards
Any accidents or incidents
Any injuries, however minor
Any near misses
