WHAT IS AN ACTIVE
VOICE?
THE ACTIVE VOICE
The active voice is the "normal" voice. This is
the voice that we use most of the time.
In the active voice, the object receives the
action of the verb:
Marilyn wrote the letter.

SUBJECT VERB OBJECT

ACTIVE >
Marilyn wrote the letter.
EXAMPLES:
The dog jumped onto the boy.

Kristy gives a book report

Marco got a 10 in his math test

Lisa plays the sax

1. Move the active sentence's direct object
into the sentence's subject slot.
2. Place the active sentence's subject into a
phrase beginning with theprepositionby.
3. Add a form of theauxiliary verbbeto the
main verb and change the main verb's
form.

THE PASSIVE VOICE
The passive voice is less usual.
In the passive voice, the subject receives the
action of the verb.
We use the passive voice when we want to make
the active object more important.

The letter was mailed by Marilyn.

EXAMPLES
The dog jumped on the boy
The boy was jumped by the dog.

Kristy gives a book report


A book report is given by Kristy

Marco got a 10 in his math test


A 10 was gotten by Marco

Lisa plays the sax


The sax is played by Lisa

2. Remove the auxiliary verbbefrom the

3. Place the passive sentence's object of the
