MAINTENANCE WORK,

TASK,ACTIVITY AND
SCHEDULE
Maintenance Work

Whenever a system is shut down for maintenance the first activity is to list
out the total maintenance work to be carried out on the system. The various
elements of this maintenance work are tasks, subtasks and activities.
A maintenance work consists of set of maintenance tasks which put together
and restore the functionality of the system.
A maintenance task consists of a set of subtasks which combine to form the
maintenance task.
A maintenance subtasks consists of a set of activities which are the smallest
elements of the maintenance work.
A maintenance activity cannot be further subdivided.
On listing all the elements of the maintenance work, the maintenance plan or
work schedule is framed.
A maintenance plan or work schedule consists of a list of maintenance tasks
to be performed on the system along with their associated times.
These tasks can be independent of or dependent on each other.
The dependent maintenance task can be performed in sequence or
simultaneously or a combination of sequential or simultaneous configuration.
Maintenance Work Schedule

The schedule indicates the lists of tasks to bee performed in sequence along
with the times that they take.
The arrows indicate the start and stop of a single maintenance task. It can be
seen that task 1 and 2 are simultaneous and start together but task 1 end in
half a day while task 2 takes one day.
Task 3 is also carried out simultaneously to task 1 and 2 and independent of
either, starting in the second half of day 1 ending on day 3. Task 4 is
dependent on task 2 and task 5 on task 4.
All these task are in sequential order and can only start after the previous
task is over.
The end of task 5 signals the completion of the maintenance work on the
system.
Activity

The first activity to be performed is to diagnose the failure.

In this case a small illustrative example is taken where the diagnosis/identification
of failure takes half an hour from 8:00 am to 8:30 am.
The next activity dismantling to reach the broken
component/unit/subassembly/assembly takes one hour 8:30 am to 9:30 am.
The next activity is replacement or repair of the damaged part which takes one
hour from 9:30 am to 10:30 am.
Then the reassembly of the system is started.
This takes one hour 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
This is followed by alignment of the system if any with the predecessor or
successor systems and testing of the system for its proper functioning.
This takes half an hour from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm.The maintenance task is now
complete.
