Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972)
He was born on May 30, 1892 in Paco Manila
A bookkeeper
His wife was Bonifacia Cueto
A genre painter who had been trainedat Manilas
Escuela de Bellas y Dibujo and who had also
travelled in Europe
In 1905, Fernando Amorsolo, aged 13, was
apprenticed to de la Rosa.
The young mans first commercial success came
when he sold water color postcards for 10
centavos.
In 1908, Amorsolo won the second prize for the
painting Levendo Periodico at the Bazar Escaolta.
The following year, he enrolled at the Art School of
the Liceo de Manila.
In 1909 he began attending the University of the
Philippines School of Fine Arts.
In 1916, he graduated with honors and began a
dual career as an instructor and commercial artist.
In 1916, Enrique Zodel de Ayala, a Spanish
citizen who was a leading businessman in the
Philippines, sponsored Amorsolo to study at the
adademia de San Fernando in Madrid.
After returning to Manila, Amorsolo set up a
studio and began an enormously productive
period.
He began to create a most wonderful artworks in
the country

Guillermo Estrella Tolentino (1890-1976)
He was born on July 24, 1890 in Malolos,
Bulacan.
National Artist for Sculpture in 1973.
Father of Philippine Atrs
The young Tolentino showed an early talent
in sculpting, have been able to mold figures
of horses and dogs out of clay.
Tolentino started studying in Malolos
Intermediate School and continued his High
School years in the same city. After studying
in Malolos, he went to Manila and attend
classes in the School of Fine Arts of the
University of the Philippines, under Vicente
Rivera for painting and later for sculpture
under Vicente Francisco.
In 1915 he graduated in painting and
sculpture.
By 1919 he decided to go to America and
work as a waiter. Bernard Baruch saw his
small statue Freedom granted him a
scholarship in Ecole de Beaux Arts.
In 1923, he returned in the Philippines then
he opened a studio in Manila.
In 1926, he was appointed as a instructor in
the University of the Philippines School of
Fine Arts.
He won the design and commissioning of
the Bonifacio Monument. The UP Oblation
was made at the same time.

Carlos Botong Francisco (1912-1969)
He was a distinguished muralist from and
best known for his historical pieces.
Also known as the Poet of Angono, Rizal he
single-handedly brought back the art of mural
painting in Philippines.
He went to School of Fine Arts in the
University of the Philippines, although he
came from the school of arts as Amorsolo, he
did not follow the traditional style but
developed a modernist style.
After the 2nd World War, he taught in School
of Fine Arts in University of Santo Thomas at
the same time working with Manuel Conde for
Cinema. He Worked as a Playwright.
He was the second Filipino who received the
title of National Artist in Painting in 1973 after
Fernando Amorsolo.

Hernando Ruiz Ocampo (1911-1978)
Ocampo was born in Santa Cruz, Manila but
later transferred to Maypajo, Caloocan.
He originally studied law,commerce and
creative writing, and worked as a writer
before he taught himself the visual arts.
A self-taught painter, was a leading member
of the pre-war Thirteen Moderns, the group
that charted the course of modern art in the
Philippines.
His works provided an awareness of the
harsh social realities in the country
immediately after the Second World War and
contributed significantly to the rise of the
nationalist spirit in the post-war era.
His abstract works that left an indelible mark
on Philippine Modern Art.
He also played a pivotal role in sustaining the
Philippine Art Gallery, the countrys first
gallery.
