What is inferencing skill in reading?
Today people have a lot of choice in how they get the news. In
this article, you will learn the results of a survey that examines
how young people choose to get their news.
What are the ethical issues that photographers and photo editors
face in mainstream journalism? This magazine article looks at
some of the issues.

The biggest competition for news and information in the
future are young people themselves and their social
networks. The importance of the social network as
disseminator of news and information is on the rise. Many
participants listed discussion with friends as a top source
for news and information, sometimes ranking higher than TV
or newspapers. In particular, social networks appear to be
key in spreading entertainment news for most young people.

A survey of ten young people showed that youth get their news from a
variety of sources. Very few young people want to interact with the news
media, so they mostly use cell phones and newspapers. Most of them think
traditional news sources are less accurate than new media sources.
Researchers also found that young people are interested in local news but
not global news. Age and gender seem to have a small effect on their
specific interests. Finally, the survey showed that social networks are not an
important source of news for young people.

Work with a partner. Look at the title and the pictures. Who
are the people? What are they doing? Write a caption for
each picture.
Skim the first paragraph and the last paragraph. Check to see if your
captions are appropriate. Then read the whole text.
