DETERMINATION OF LIQUID LIMIT

by cone penetrometer method

IS Code: IS 2720 (Part V) 1985
Apparatus:

Cone Penetrometer
Balance
Container
Oven
Procedure:

Take 150 grams of soil specimen passing 425 micron IS sieve, add distilled water
and form a paste.
Keep the sample for sufficient time in an air tight container to ensure uniform
moisture distribution.
The wet sample shall then be transferred to cylindrical cup of cone penetrometer
apparatus, ensure that no air is trapped in the process.
Level the soil up to the top of the cup of cone penetrometer apparatus.
Place it on the base of apparatus.
.Adjust the cone point of penetrometer just touching the surface of soil paste in
the cup clamped in the position.
Note down the initial reading as shown in the graduated scale.
Release the vertical clamp allowing the cone to penetrate into the paste under its
own weight.
Procedure:

Note the penetration after 5 seconds to the nearest millimeter.

If the penetration lies outside 14 to 28 mm the test shall be repeated with suitable
adjustment.
To increase moisture content add more water, to reduce moisture content spread
the paste on glass plate.
Determine moisture content of soil.
