RIGID PAVEMENT

JOINTS &
REINFORCEMENT
JOINTS

• Contraction Joints
• Expansion Joints
• Isolation Joints
• Construction Joints
CONTRACTION JOINTS

• normally placed every 18 ft

to control cracking due to
pavement contraction
caused by shrinkage and
temperature fluctuations.
• A dowel bar assembly,
commonly called a
"basket", is placed on the
subgrade before paving at
the location of the
contraction joint.
Expansion Joints

• An expansion joint is
placed at a specific
location to allow the
pavement to expand
without damaging adjacent
structures or the pavement
itself.
• Progressive or even large
seasonal contraction joint
openings cause a loss of
load transfer particularly
ISOLATION JOINT
• A joint positioned so as to
separate concrete from
adjacent surfaces or into
individual structural
elements that are not in
direct physical contact,
such as an expansion
joint.
Construction Joints

• A construction joint is a
joint between slabs that
results when concrete is
placed at different times.
This type of joint can be
further broken down into
transverse and longitudinal
construction joints.
Longitudinal construction
joints also allow slab
warping without
appreciable separation or
cracking of the slabs.
