LET’S AND WHY DON’T
• Although there are many ways to express suggestions
“let’s” and “why don’t” have the same meaning. They are
used to make suggestions about activities for you and
me.
LET’S
• It is used to suggest plans or activities.
• "Let's" is a contraction of the verb LET + the
"object pronoun" "us". But the contracted form
is almost always used.
Structure
Affirmative:
Let's + verb (base form) + (Complement)
• Let's go to the restaurant now!
• Let's go to the cinema tonight.
• Let's go to the travel agent's this afternoon to book
our ticket
Negative:

Let's + not + verb (base form) + (Complement)

• Let's not buy that house

• Let's not behave like that
• Let's not be sad
• To finish, and only as a revision, we will have to bear
in mind that, when forming the question tags of
sentences that start with Let's, the question tag will
always be Shall we ?, in both affirmative and
negative sentences.
• The subject pronoun WE is used, because, as we
have said, Let's implies the first person plural, that
is: we.
So:
• Let's have a coffee, shall we?
• Let's go to the beach, shall we?
WHY DON’T
• 'Don't' is a contraction of 'do not.' When using
'why' you are asking a question that involves
yourself and the person you are talking to.
Structure:
WHY + Don’t -(Do not) + subject + verb (base form) + (Complement)
• We often find it in advertising:
Why not take a break in the south-west?
Why not treat yourself to a meal at the Icon
Restaurant?
• We can use why don’t …? to make a specific
suggestion:
You look really tired. Why don’t you take some time
out and rest?
It’s getting late in the evening now. Why don’t we
stop now and work on this tomorrow morning?
• "Why don't we go bowling tonight?"
• "Why don't we pick some fresh flowers?"
• "Why don't we play a game of chess?“
